If i end up using the free 45gal hex for a seahorse set up where is a good place to start doing research? Like what would i use for filters, i know they need less flow then my reef tank but how little? What type and how many should i keep?
I have a 48 gal. tall tank. I have a 70 gal. Aqua clear filter on it. I also run a prism pro protein filter and 1 228 power sweep. I plan on adding a 2 power sweep soon.
You could keep Erectus or even Reidi in the tank. What do you want to keep? I would recommend something captive bred. Saves you time and money in the long run.
Honestly I don't know what I want to keep. I have always wanted to set up a seahorse tank and my girlfriend loves them (I am sure she will have some say in what I keep. I have not done any research really I did not plan on setting one up until my reef tank is where I wanted it to be. I saw this tank for free on my local club so I am grabbing it today; they said it is in working condition. So the tank will most likely sit a round until I have the research done and money to spend on a 2nd tank. But I figured I would start the research now and maybe can find some deals on used equipment I want and buy it slowly.
They are pretty hard to have set up. I have a 55 hex seahorse tank and their are three H. Reidi. With keeping a hex one of the hardest parts was having a sump. We ended up doing a in tank sump so put black Plexiglas in the back and did the sump that way. It really helps out a lot and gives a more natural look. As far as lighting goes I just use regular cheap lighting they seem to love it, and I have moon LED for night all on a timer. Just make sure the temp is fine and most likely will be fairly easy to do.
