Unfortunately I dont have any room for a peninsula :(... but maybe someday...lol... No SPS this is going to be as simple as possible... softies and maybe a fish.

If I understand correct, your going to plumb from the return down to the other end. I'd then split the return with a Y and locline. I'd say a mag 3 or 5. I ran a 5/7 on my old 20 as the only source of flow but that was at about 4' head.

Is it only going to overflow at the media tray section?

Well Im going to not have too much flow due to my skimmer being right in the path. I am just going to plumb it coming right from the same end, not running to the opposite. Yes that side of the divider will have cut outs so the water will flow over the media tray.

I like option 1 and I would use a mag 2 or 3. You will have almost no head pressure with the sump being internal. Its hard to say which one will be better until you finish the thing and we test it out but either one would work.

I'm thinking closer to the 200 gph I can always put that small tunze in the back corner if i need a little more flow.

OK new thought from Nate...doing a center over flow that will go in the back but only along about 12 inches or so. rock can be built up to kinda hide it.
also Dave you said you had a 20L doing have any holes in it? cause i was looking at the one i have and it does have a hole in it...lol..
 
K I have been thinking...since I will only have a few fish in this tank prolly 3, 2 clowns and some algae eater like a lawnmower blenny, I was thinking about just using a hang on back filter and cutting a part out for the heater in it. im not sure with that small bio load that i would really need a skimmer and i dont think it will skim an awful lot if i did have one in there. what are your thoughts about it
 
I always thought about throwing my heater in my bakpak when I had the 29G... I think it would be fine if you can find a nice small, slim one
 
If you are going to stick with softies, with a small bioload you could get away without a skimmer. With a small display, frequent water changes will be snap and will maintain organics and nitrates within acceptable levels. Talk to JacksonPT. He had a beautiful tank w/o a skimmer.
 
yea I was thinking more about it and I think it would crowd the tank alot less with like a large penguin HOB filter. do they still make penguins...lol...or is there a better one.

It will probably work fine. If you keep the bio load small you won't need a skimmer IMO...
 
I used one of those (slightly bigger) on a 45 gallon softy tank and it worked well. There was a little bit of salt creep on the filter every so often but it wasn't too bad at all. No skimmer just water changes. A weekly 5 gallon water change on a skimmer-less 20 long with a low bio-load and the water will be clean enough for SPS. How hard is a 5 gallon water change? It's nothing. You could setup a garbage can with the new salt water and use it every week for over a month. You would only have to make water once every 5 weeks. I wouldn't bother with a skimmer but it is your call. The one thing you will have to consider if you go without an overflow is gunk building up on top of the water. The best way to deal with that is to have good flow. I would ditch the skimmer and overflow and just get some good powerheads. That will be the key to the success of this tank IMO.
 
imo, i wouldn't keep water made somewhere for a long time...it tends to get impurities in it. i think that is what happened to us a couple months ago...the water sat too long in the container...carol

That could be. I always make mine fresh each time. OK so nix the making the water ahead of time. Just do it each week :)
