Setting up Frag Tank... Some Questions

I got the egg crate; I got the plastic ties. I want to set up something that will have three shelves at different heights. Kind of like a stair case running the length of the tank (a 20g high tank)

a) What's the best way to cut the egg crate?
b) Anyone have any pictures of something similar so I can get an idea of how to construct it?

Thanks in advance!

I'm making some of these now.

Here's how I cut the eggcrate. Tedious, but works. Use a ruler to draw a line (i screwed up a few times until I started doing this). Then, I cut the teel one at a time using a pair of tin snips I have. Shears, garden clippers, etc will work. Then youre left with a bunch of ragged teeth. Just push them over one at a time and they snap off cleanly. Like I said, tedious, but works.

Im then attaching to 1" PVC. 3/4 would prob be better but I had it here, so... I'm making my top shelf (I only have two) movable/removable so can can stack or whatever.

All I can say is thank you Ray (onegreenray)!

And a thank you too to Bill (Reef Junkie) for donating the first frag to my frag tank :)

BTW, how are the frags doing that you took home?

Easiest way to cut it is to simply take a rigid piece of metal, like a file or the backside of a hacksaw (not just the blade but the blade holder), but I like using a file, put the eggcrate firmly on the floor and quickly swipe it down the row you want to cut, the piece will part nicely along the swipe, with only the pieces you hit breaking.
There may be a few rougher edges which are easily cleaned with another swipe or two.
Don't be timid when doing it, the more force you use the cleaner the "break".
It doesn't sound like it works, but it does and some may even say its fun.

Oh and when I say "on the floor", I mean hold the eggcrate vertically, and swipe down towards the floor...

The top shelf is all SPS, of the following:
  • Pink Birdsnest (perhaps half a dozen frags)
  • Blue milli (four frags: one small, the other three a very good size)
  • Acropora Nana (two frags)
  • Blue Staghorn (colored up nicely in the tank... blue/teal and purple)
  • There might have been one other type, but my brain has shut down for the night
The bottom two shelves are filled with zoanthids and four mushroom frags

any time loonster. glad we finally go the frags done. now for the sale.

bill,

sad thing is the tank doesn't look like it was fragged to much.

Holy Cow! That's incredible - Are you selling those frags or just growing them out for your tank or trade or what?

Most (99.12) of them are for sale :) There are two in there that I'm just growing out a bit to eventually move in to my display tank.

All the rest are for sale.

Keith,

What's going on with your tank?

going to be downgrading to something smaller.

kids and all im hoping soon so want to start getting things strait now so when they do eventually get here i can put the money i would be spending on that into them and in a few years ill be back with a bigger tank

Keith can i have a frag of your tank? LOL It would look awesome in my basement. Better yet ill trade you my 120 for it :) Ahh yes the joys of kids! You will love it!

What's that blue on the top shelf? Do you have a list of softies? I haven't added anything to my tank in a while.... The sps tank I am starting next week should be ready for frags in a couple of months. :)

I think you're referring to the three blue milli frags which are SPS. Though what you might be seeing on the right side of the top shelf what appears to be blue zoanthids is really he paper on the back of the tank LOL.

I have a few nice mushroom frags, and a bunch of zoanthids.

looking forward to the kids so im going to downgrade to just my breeding setup the 30cube with the WC black/white ocellaris and then 3 grow out tanks.

going to be getting rid of the 300 soon

I don't mean to hijack my own thread (but why not? Who am I going to complain to?)....

You just put a lot of work and effort in to building the stand/wall, etc., etc. Why not just keep it empty for now until you're able to use it?

(ok, back to our regularly scheduled thread... gee, I wonder when he's going to post prices?)
