setting up fuge

I'm setting up a fuge on my 58 reef so i'm wondering what do most of you use crushed coral, aragonite sand, miracle mud or rubble and how deep also if any of you have any extra cheato

Just gave away all the cheato I had. I have allways made them barebottom. The sand in a fuge is typically a place where lots of detritus builds up and is hard to remove. Lots of people do have sand though. If you do want to go with sand I would make it very fine and deep, ~ 5" or more so it will let less detritus in and act as a DSB. Also you will want to be able to remove the sand someday if you need to. Here is a nice thread on fuges:

I have sand in my fuge... Not sure if I'd do it again though... I used that Carib-Sea Live Sand stuff...

As Chris stated they can be a PITA to keep clean... A lot of people are going to Remote DSB's... Where they set up a Media Reactor, Canister filter, or bucket with a bunch of sand and then tie it into their system... These are a lot easier to maintain, and still give you the benefits of a DSB without as many of the maintanence headaches... More than likely this is what I'll be setting up when I combine my systems...

Oh, and I'll go BB with my cheato... ;)

my fuge will be remote from my sump supplied by a small pump and gravity fed back to sump so hopefully I want disturb it much

I was running a little on my 29. I have a small space for a fuge on the 120 in the sump setup but it's just not big enough to do anything except maybe grow pods so I just keep it clean and bare. I don't notice any difference when running one and it just makes one more thing I have to work around when doing maintenance.
