Setting up plumbing

my tank is going to be a 50 gallon wih something like 20 gallon sump. It will be run on a quite one 4000 which pumps 1017gph although I have calculated that with the 4.5 feet of head it will only be pumping 650gph. Do I need to drill two holes for two standpipes???? or will one do just fine??? and how big is ideal???

I always favor using two standpipes. If one gets blocked then the other handles the flow. Not really necessary but it is insurance against a wandering snail creating a plug in the return plumbing.

A one inch bulkhead should handle up to 600gph so two 1" or even better 2 1.25" bulkheads would work fine for your pump.

ok well now I realized another issue. I have to make sure that both my standpipes are EXACTLY the same... right?? because if not then one won't be doing anything.
