Setting up QT

If I was to set up a 50g QT tonight, do I have to wait for any cycle or is it pretty much ready to go once the SG and temp are right? I am getting a 50 tonight and I have someone that wants to give me a clown and a pigmy angel because she is moving and tearing down her tank. I plan on just using a millenium filter and pvc for them to hide in.

You should run an HOB filter on the main tank for three days prior to setting up the qt so it can handle the ammonia spikes

If you have to set it up tonight, use display tank water, and add some live rock from the display tank.
I would set up your hob filter and replace it in three days with the live rock, or use both unless you have to medicate with copper based medications.
In that case the rock should be removed or you can't use it in display tank again
I would monitor the ammonia level in the qt every 12 hours and prepared to do a water change should it spike to any degree

ok well I guess I should have told the rest of the story. I dont have a display. I am getting a 125g tomorrow. It has been up and running for 6 years. I got a 50g free today. A tank I looked at a week or so ago had two fish in it. I didnt buy the tank but the woman selling it emailed me and asked if I would just take the two fish for free so that she didnt have to take them to a store. I planned on setting up the QT and leaving the fish in there until the 125g was ready for their introduction.

gottcha---so set up your qt tonight with your salt mixture and heater. Put a power head in for circulation and an air stone it you have it.
Tomorrow when you get the other tank transfer some live rock from it into the 50 gal qt unti you get an hob filter going.

for the future, just keep filter media in the sump so it's always ready, even if you find a quick deal on a fish
