Setting up reef tank

I'm setting up a 75 gallon saltwater tank and I was wondering if I buy a hang on the back protien skimmer do I also need a hang on the back filter? I'm not getting a sump.

No , unless you want to run carbon threw it but that's the only thing I would put in it , live rock is all the filtration you need on a reef tank
