my local lfs is suppose to order me a female reidi. i just want to make sure that it is actually a female. how can you tell? pics would be great.
thanks
In these two pictures, the female is the brown one, the male is the pink one. Look at where their stomachs meet their tails. The male has a pouch there, the female doesn't and her body meets her tail at a sharp angle. http://gallery.seahorse.org/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=2223 http://gallery.seahorse.org/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=2277
That being said, if the seahorses are very young, your "female" could still grow a pouch later and turn out to actually be a male. If she is older than 6 or 8 months or larger than 6" uncurled, there is a good chance she is truly female. But, all seahorses start out looking like a female externally.
