Finally snapped a couple photos of the acans I picked up from Jofish at the last meet. There must have been two dozen acans all amazing but I had to exercise a little self control

If Tom is the chalice king I want to be the acan man :D

Pics are pretty grainy, iphone zoomed in a good bit.

Those are some great pics! Suprised that is from the Iphone. When I use mine to take pics of my zoas they are never that clear

It's a bit tricky but you can get it to focus well enough and get the lighting right you can pull off some pretty clean shots. Granted I prob took 3-4 of each before cropping one and posting it.

those are some nice cans! Ill have to get a few shots of the ones I picked up at the same time. Dont worry the acan man title is all yours. :D

Go Justin! The enthusiam I'm sensing reminds me of myself when I had over a dozen acans three or four years ago. I also loved taking macro pics of them, such as the one which is my avatar. Here's another:

Learn how to white balance and how to adjust exposure grasshopper.

Cheeeea buddy!!!! Love the green splashes!!! I may need to invest in a quality camera need something with more options to mess with. Although I'd bet I can find an app to give me a little more control :D

The iphone is not a great reef camera due to its inabilities to white balance under high color temperature lighting and to shoot RAW format files. Least you think I'm Apple bashing, which I am guilty of frequently, it shares those lethal flaws with most if not all cellphones and many point and shoot cameras as well.

The inability to white balance properly is what results in the "too blue" pics. Combine that with blue led lighting, and typically the blue channel is entirely blown out, such as in the last shot.

Zooming with your iphone results in a degredation of image quality. It's a fixed lens so it's a purely digital zoom which simply takes the existing pixels and enlarges them. Sure, if one has no editing skills, it can be a convenience. And if one has a large range of light intensity, it might result in better exposure by narrowing the range of light to what is available only in the subject area. But quality takes a hit as the focal length of the lens doesn't change. It is this change in the focal length of a telephoto lens which allows the size of the field of view to be varied as it hits the image sensor. The entire image sensor is still being used, instead of just a portion of it, and thus image quality is maintained. That's the difference between optical (lens based) and digital (camera based) zoom.

You could tweak the picture coming off the camera to white balance better if you were so inclined. There may well be an app for that. Not working with a RAW file, you'll experience a slight loss of image quality when you save again, as jpg compression is not a loseless algorithm. But the image colors would be more accurate and side by side you'd say it was the obviously better picture. RAW files are great because they contain the "raw" image sensor data without any manipulation that cameras apply, such as auto white balancing and jpg compression.

One more for you:

Thanks.

There was an interesting thing going on at the time I happened to be taking the photo. A nassarius snail had crawled up the rock to the acan and its proboscis / snoot lightly tapped the face of the inflated acan polyp on the left. Both the snail and the acan reacted. The snail turned around and went away down the acan mount. The acan appeared to inflate its "skin" on its polyp face. You can see the transparent membrane that appears to extend to the bottom of the tentacles. 30 seconds on earlier or later and I wouldn't have seen it, let alone photographed it.

Man now you're making me hope there's lots of acans in the frag raffle. I got one no one wanted a few meetings back and they look awesome.

jesus ken! i need you to come over and take some pictures of some of my acans! i have some that have super weird and crazy patterns and colors and my phone doesnt do them justice

Luis, we have six small Acan colonies for the raffle so we have that covered Bud.

Cool I really hope I will get at least one of those. Today I got some white zoas with a greenish brown skirt. They look pretty cool hope they do good. Picture is from the owners colony I got a small frag of them.
