shallowest tank for tang

hello guys , whats the abdolute minimum height of a tank which a young tang can be kept happy untill reachin adult size ? which are the best candidates ?

At my LFS they have a " tang and frag tank" that is 8 foot by 6 foot and 12 inches deep . All the tangs are full grown . They have been in there for years

IME, lateral swimming room is much more important for tangs than vertical space. They are all active swimmers, so tank length is more important than height. Also, it depends on which species of tang you plan to keep.

thx for the replys , my space allowance is of 4feet by1 foot , my problem is the weight which i dont want to exceed much of 200 pounds so if im gonna utilize the whole 4 feet of lateral space ill have to keep the height close to 10 inches of water collum , what do u say guys ? how long can a golf ball sized regal tang could be ok

It can't be. For any time.

The dimensions you say are only 25 gallons of water..
48"x12"x10"h

Regal, or blue hippo tangs require a 225 g tank. 9x your tank size.
Don't do it. Although, from your post, it sounds like you've already made up your mind.

hey bbt , my current setup is a ~20g with 12g sump the DT is 50cmx25x30h ~9gallons ... using old tanks that were laying around , im on the plans on what the new tank will be and just want to see what are my stockin limits , the tank will start building around september if we are still around , so im far from making my mind yet :p

so , at 4feetx10inches height whats the "biggest " fish i can add temporary and be cost efective simce its gonna be replaced evry now and then ( my optimum time would be around once a year ) i beleaved that a baby tang could make it somewhat happy till late juvenile stage

care to elaborate why only 200lbs?
i'm new to saltwater but not to fish keeping and while a lot differs one thing remains constant... your responsibility is to be the best fishkeeper you can be. to me keeping a fish that uses a wide range of water column in a confined space isn't doing your part. just my opinion :)

I would not put any tang in a tank that size, even if it's only a juvenile. You should plan the tank around the adult size of the fish. That tank is effectively a nano tank, so you should look at smaller species like gobies, blennies, basslets, dottybacks etc. Larger fish are going to make water quality a challenge.

Larger fish are going to make water quality a challenge.

although i should quote the whole mesage that last sentence needs to be said twice :p

hey john , the aquarium will be sitting on a bookshelf :D its not the vertical forces that limit me , that can be solved as easilly as three wooden planks ,its the fact that the aquarium sits reletevelly high thus having a high center of gravity and i leave in greece where three tectonic plates push each other consantly , also i sit something like 40cm away of the front glass and already the 9g is a bit intimidating and kinda bulky in apearence plus the lights will be gettin in my eyesight , although before putin the tank on its place i was planin for the new one to be at the same height , my height clearence is 45cm's at 30cm's i already have to do breakdance mooves to reach all the sides of the aquarium , let alone the sump that sits next to it , i should be recording the day ill be filling the sump with my rock from my 55g old tank :p

You could maybe do a smaller tang species like tomini or bristletooth, but that could still be pushing it.

the problems are 2 , 1st the only really small sized tang i can purchase locally is regal , 2. the only tang that i can afford keep buying and giving away yearly is the ~40-50euro golf ball sized , apart from that havent even seen such tangs in person , that one is uber cool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP2RxqpYJbY

the fact is that any tang will pump 100litres per hour through its gills , let alone imports exports , its an overkill

If you can't have the space, you can't have a tang - it's that simple!

I have trouble to see the appeal of tangs anyway. There are many smaller, if not even tiny fish that are magnitudes more interesting in their behavior and who actually act natural even in a nano tank.
A tang will always be like a tiger in a cage unless the tank is huge (= several hundreds, if not thousands of gallons).
