Shark and Ray Tank

Sharks!!!!
So my Girlfriend and I did the Shark Deep Dive at Sea World inside their huge shark tank. Of coarse now she wants me to turn our 250 tank (which is empty at the moment) into a shark and ray tank. It's a go --------:) Gotta make her happy.
She told me it was top priority. lol

I'm gonna track the progress in here and am looking for some suggestions along the way.

I like the concept, but let me be the first to tell you that a 250g isn't big enough to properly house shark(s) and/or ray(s) long term. Either way, good luck with your project and keep us posted.

Multiply that number by 10 and you might be able to do a couple of the smaller, more appropriate sharks.

What is the usual size tank for a shark. It seems the only ones that are available are the Port Jackson and the Banded Bamboo shark.

250 would be like keeping an elephant in a box with holes punched in it. Ponds are a great way to go if you can set it up in the space you have. Or a custom built tank that is wider and longer over deep.

Sharks in general dont belong in home aquariums. Like most have said, 1 because of the size of the tank required and 2 because of the electrical signals in your house from everday items like phones and appliances that wreck havoc on sharks.

Save the money and go on shark dives in the wild :)

try using columbian sharks.. although they are catfish, they swim and behave like sharks and u can succesfully keep a school in a 250G. they get to about 1 or 2' and can be acclimated ( and should be) to marine waters in a matter of weeks.

I am planning a 300G tank with sharks and ray and this is my shark.

and plus, if u dont tell ur gf, i doubt she will know that these arent real sharks.

First off, what are the dimensions of the 250g? You might be able to get away with keeper one coral catshark (gets 24") and one of the smaller rays. IMO it wouldn't be worth it, plus the wow factor of sharks is short lived and gets boring. If you want excitement with your fish, go aggressive FO, if you want pretty, go reef.

I agree. I had a friend that hatched a bamboo shark. It was really cool at first but after a couple of months of watching the shark hide in the rocks all day he got rid of it. Unfortanetly soon after he got rid of it the shark decided to go carpet surfing, which also was a bad decision. I dont mean to burst your bubble I think that you should do what you want but I think the idea of an agressive species tank with lion fish and Angels and like a dragon eel would be pretty cool.

I appreciate all of your thoughts and concerns. Yeah I don't want to jump into anything that I will regret later on and how I know how demanding and rewarding the hobby is. Prior I did house a fairly aggressive tank with a miniatus grouper and a spotted grouper. Both of which were 12-13" in length. Throwing live shrimp in was a real treat to watch but when the miniaus killed my emperor angel fish I was done. My 75 gallon reef is doing very well and after 2 years of it up and running I am very pleased with the growth. I can post some dimensions as soon as I get home and am open to all suggestions.
