Shipping Anemones- Magnifica and Gigantea's.

I really need some help and opinions from you guys. It seems like most places have very few if any Gigantea and Magnifica available. Some of you guys have to drive over an hour to the LFS. Here in Houston, I have some Good connections. I have a few friends that work at local LFS who hook me up. Also have a company online that I've built a relationship with and get great prices from him.

I would like to ship some Magnifica's to reefers here in the US and maybe even international if I can and the person doesn't mind paying the shipping on that.

I think I may be able to start getting Gigantea's too. Still working on that.

My question:

1. What do you guys think is minimal box size?

2. Minimal water in box?

3. Weight of box?

4. Size of box? (Exp. 20 lbs 3 NEM's and water- 20x20x15 box)

I need your opinions on just one Gig or Mag, 2, or 3 in one box.

Also would like to know who you think is cheapest?

I can't send anything until I figure out how to send it.

You guys want to pay the cheapest shipping possible right?

Help me do some research and I'll get the ball rolling.

Jared,

You're my only hope for a Mag that isn't tan, so hope this helps.

Here's a picture of a box I received this week from DFS. It's rated as a 25# - 16" container. It's outside dimensions are 16"L x 10 5/8"D x 8 7/8"H. The Styrofoam is 3/4" thick. (Pay no attention to the fish tank build in progress :P)

In regards to size and quantity per box, that is all going to depend on what you find for boxes and how big the nems going in them are. I personally wouldn't put more then 2 average size Mags in a box this size (bagged obviously) surrounded by peanuts. The popular thing from DFS seems to be to tape a heat pack to the lid.

The nems I have seen shipped are all bagged with the bags half full of water, then triple bagged. No idea exactly what they put in the water to keep it oxygenated if anything at all.

From the google search I did, uline seemed to have the best deals:

The size I would look into for shipping singles would be the 9.25"L x 9.25"W x 7"H ID container. For 2 boxes you will pay $23 so $11.5 a piece worst case scenario. Again though this is all going to depend on what size the nem is.

If you could get away with an 8" x 6" x 7" ID box, that's $39 for 4 and cuts the cost down to $9.75 per box. So I'm going to round up here $10 for a box, $1 for peanuts, $0.5 for tape. $0.5 for bags and $1 for a heat pack, you're looking at $13.00 your cost to box up 1 Nem and take it to the wherever you're shipping. So if it were me I would say $15 sell price per box added to whatever shipping costs will be. This should account for a minimal amount of gas...etc things you may use.

You're going to need to weigh a nem of yours to figure out amount of water. The carton I showed a photo of, does not weigh 1# as it did not register on my scale, so box weight should be negligible.

I really appreciate that. Trying to gather as much info and think about how I can do it safely for the cheapest price. I've alreaded registered on both FedEx and USPS.

As we've discussed before, you'll need to decide your method of shipping... Lots of water, no water, etc. I personally would opt for a lot of water. Two gallons of water is approximately 16 pounds. I wouldn't go with most economical, rather what will help to ensure the safe arrival of the nem.

As you probably know, gigs are terrible shippers. I recommend becoming an expert at shipping mags before even attempting gigs, unless you have access to extremely small gigs, which are very rare.

I forgot to mention, iBlueWater only ships from airport to airport. Definitely not the cheapest but it's the best in terms of having the nem in transit for the shortest amount of time. For those who want mags and gigs, they will be willing to pay a premium to ensure the health of the nem. I would look into your options for this type of shipping as well.

I'm definitely not the nem expert here, but 2 gallons of water seems a little excessive?

I want him to be able ship them as safely as possible as well, and I think many people who are active in this forum feel the same way about the health of nems. That said, I don't want to pay $100 for something, when I can buy it for $75 if they both are adequate.

We all know any nem that goes into the mail, is probably not going to look the same on my doorstep as it did when it left yours. I'm just unsure how increasing the water volume significantly and adding significant weight and in effect price, is going to help?

Yeah, I'm thinking 1 gallon per Mag at least.

Triple bagged in styrofoam and box. Tapped around edges like LA does.

I'll wait on the gigs.

I think bob does that because you get a discount if the buyer picks up at airport and it's better for him. Animal will have less chance of dying.

I think with more water it will keep the water and NEM healthier. Of course that drives the price up for the buyer. This is why I'm open to opinions and discussion. Good to hear everybody's opinions. Newbie or expert.

Small amount of water will foul with excessive mucus and regurgitated food.

I plan to start your first dose of Cipro in the bag while the NEM is in route. This will help tremendously with shipping.

Too bad you can't get one of those CO2 cartridges that go in the bb guns, but with oxygen, and let it slow bubble the whole trip.

My Hybrid powder from DD was in layers of bags, it was crazy. Huge box, large water volume, he arrived like a champ. It took a while to get in just to see him, one layer was black.

I think I can get some small ones. Working on it now. How small are you talking about? What's the smallest you've seen? Do they look the same. Still have purple dots or can they be different colors?
