Shoal tang

I have a 125 with a large Achilles, medium yellow and small tomini. I want to add a small/medium shoal. I read they are aggressive to other tangs of the same body type. I’m especially concerned about the Achilles. What’s the general consensuses about the shoal? How aggressive are they really?

The Sohal will get very big, and is by far one of the most agressive tangs. Putting it in with an Achilles, yellow, and tomini, is just going to cause too many problems, and the tank is WAY too small.

I'd say you're set for tangs. Nice ones at that!! Enjoy them. Look into other species of fish...what else do you like?

imo achilles tangs are one of the meanest of the tang family and one of the most beautyful and one of the most difficult to acclimate i would not even attempt to add anything else to your tank b/c the odds are that if you do put a sohal in there the achilles will go crazy and stress himself along with the others in the tank and probroably go down hill from there and besides a sohal in that size tank is definetaley not recommended!

I used to have a sohal in a 350 and had to remove it as it was killing fish. Not just tangs either. 350 was probably way too small.

why risk an established achilles for a sohal?

IMO ACHilles >>>>> sohal.. :o
x2. IMO if I had an established achilles I don't think I would touch the tank. Congrats on that. If you add you are destined for war! Almost certain they will fight till the end.

Thanks for the feedback. It was my feeling as well that adding another tang will be risking what I already have… I think I’ll probably look at a foxface or some wrasse.

I just got my achilles tang today... Being an experience achilles owner, is there anything i should watch for or be aware of?

Ich, Ich, Ich. I hope you are qt'ing him, and I hope he's not going in a 90 gallon tank. They are very active fish, that need a lot of room! They need a lot of flow, they are from surge waters where the current is very strong and very oxygenated. So, lots of flow, good turnover, good water quality, and QT! All food should be soake in garlic, with other suppliments such as zoe and selcon.

I can’t say I am that experienced, more lucky. I am fortunate to get an Achilles that will eat anything. At first, he will only eat Mysis but gradually he stated enjoying everything I feed.
Best advice I can give is to just watch him. Try lots of foods and see which one he likes best.

Ya, that and what tangers said. I used to soak all food in selcon and garlic.

I just got rid of my sohal.. He was beautiful, but he grew twice as fast as the other tangs and he was quite the bully. I'm with most of the people who have resonded to your question; forget the sohal.

Sohal shouldnt be with other reef fish really, I have seen them do fine with other tangs but this is rare. I plan on getting a lg sohal as well BUT mine is going in my agressive tank with the puffers and triggers! lol
