Shock Buster (GFCI)

When I first started my SW tank I was new and didn't know too much. Now I'm getting a little smarter and have a little more common sense. With that, I realized the importance of a dedicated GFCI outlet for the "just in case" situations. I have had my fair share of spills and close calls. I want to replace my standard outlet out for a GFCI outlet.

The only thing holding me back is the tank itself. Of course my setup is right in front of the outlet. Pretty much no way to get in there to re-wire the outlet. Upon searching I found the "Shock Buster" plug and play GFCI unit.

My question for you fine people of RC is, has anyone used this unit (5 plug). Also is it as good as a GFCI unit bought at a home improvement store? Is it as responsive? I just want to have that piece of mind when I sleep or leave the house. Any input is greatly appreciated

I don't know about that particular unit, but many portable GFCI's are more prone to false trips. I had one a long time ago that would trip when turning on certain devices. I've made wall units into portable units by wiring them into a plastic electrical box with an extension cord. Works like a charm.

I purchased the 5 outlet one you posted from Lowes for $15 in November. It seems to do a good job. The only problem I have with it is it is easy to accidentally trip the reset button when plugging or un plugging a device from it. There is a real bright red indicator light that stays on 24/7 that may be aggravating as well.

Other than those nit-picky complaints, I like the shock-buster.

Thank you for the responses. I'll have to check out Lowes for the Shocker Buster. Sounds cheaper to do that.

If you can find another outlet that is inline before the outlet on your tank, you can wire in a GFCI and it will work for all outlets down stream. I did this with my tank.

The only thing you have to worry about is if you use the other outlet for something. If that outlet trips, the tank will be w/o power. Thankfully, I don't use the outlet I changed right before the tank outlet, so I do not have to worry about something else tripping it.

Just be sure that you find an outlet upstream of the tank. It is easy enough to test. If you trip it, the tanks power should cut off.

They work well.

I use the 5 outlet shock buster. It works well. I also use a 6 outlet GFCI and it works pretty good also.

False trips happen from time to time. GFCI outlets are sensitive. Nonetheless, I recommend them.
