I recently (last Friday) bought a T. crocea from a vendor from whom I've never myself bought a clam from before, but know of others who have (and they still have their clams).
Anyways, the clam looked good and full at the store, and reactive, so I didn't get any "heebie-jeebies" from it.
However, when I look at the clam now, I can see under the mantle and into the shell. Ie., there seems to be a bit of a cavity, on the side of the inhalant siphon (just above the byssal gland). It also is not expanding as much, but it does still expand some, it also closes sometimes, and I wouldn't say it is really "gaping" other than the reduced expansion (I figure it is still stressed from the transfer from one tank to another).
My other clams are T. maxima (I have three of them), and I can't seem to see under their mantles, ie., there is flesh or something. Whatever it is, I can't see into their shells like I can with this T. crocea. I don't know if that's because they're different species, or if it's because this crocea is struggling.
When I put the clam in the tank, there was a "ball of snot-like goo" under the foot, that eventually floated away. I really, really hope this was not its foot. I haven't really checked, but I don't think the clam has attached to the rock it's on yet, and now I'm kind of wondering if it ever will.
Am I just being paranoid?
If I'm not just being paranoid, ie., if there is indeed something wrong, is there anything I can do?
Tank is 75g, lit by 2x110W actinic + 2x250W Iwasaki. Dosing DT's daily, but not at full-dosage, I had to cut back because it was causing me nasty cyano blooms. NO3 and PO4 undetectable, Ca=450, Alk=3.7meq/L.
