should i buy a moorish idol

In 3 1/2 years of learning about this hobby, working in an LFS, there are only 2 people I would say have had any success with the moorish idol..and one of them is Paul B. Both people have this one thing in common...they dive for things to feed their fish.

That may have something to do with it but I can't be sure. This is the first Idol that I fed sponge almost every day to. I don't have to dive for it though, it is very common in NY you just have to have access to the water in places where it grows. Most access points are private and you need a home on the water or belong to a marina. I wish someone lived near me who had an Idol. I would like to try this sponge on someon elses fish. One fish is not a good test.
I am going out collecting from my boat today but not for sponge. I am going to large tide pools at low tide to collect amphipods, worms, crabs etc. to feed the fish.

There's no reason not to learn from other people's mistakes and successes; you don't have time to make them all. Asking about it also will give you the opportunity to find out about possible alternatives that you may not have considered, and about other ideas people have had for successfully keeping the animals alive.

It's better to get multiple opinions and then make an informed decision based on that.

Some people will have luck and some will not. I am saying do not ask someone if you SHOULD do something. Ask them what is the BEST way to do it. You have to use your own mind and make your own decisions. I feel it is best to read and learn. Let me guess. Will you ask us if you should buy a Ford or a Chevy? I would think not. You have your own mind. I am just telling this person that if they want the fish then don't ask if they should buy it. Research about the best way to take care of it and the best possibilities for it to survivie and buy the fish if it is what you want. I am just saying you will get 50/50 yes and no answers so take it for what it is worth. Whose side should he go for? The people saying yes or the peopel saying no. It is a beautoful fish and if you want it then I would say get it. People stated I could not keep my clown tang because it was "aggresive". It was the biggest baby of the tank.

BTW I haven't killed any fish with this method. Have you killed any with your method?

My "method" of making an informed decision before choosing to buy a fish? No, that hasn't been responsible for any fish deaths.

Those have been the results of uninformed decisions while still a "youngun" in this hobby (long before the existence of RC).

According to another thread, you only had that clown tang for 6 months. Some of them (and sohals) don't exhibit their true personality until later than that.
