Should I get a frag tank?

I've been debating getting or making a frag tank, but I've talked myself out of it every time because of the extra maintenance, equipment and potential problems.

Having said that, if I was able to hook both tanks together to my existing sump without breaking the bank, I would do it. I often have to frags some of my corals because they grow too fast and most times my tank ends up looking messy because of it.

Therefore, I would like to hook both my 36g bowfront and maybe a cheap CL 29G Biocube to my Eshopps RS-75 sump.

This would allow me to keep a single filtration system, sock, skimmer, etc.

Your ideas, suggestions and/or pictures of similar setups will be greatly appreciated.

Well first off I would do a shorter tank. A 29 is tall for a frag tank. I would go with a 20 or 30 long. Connecting them to same tank is easy as long as the sump can handle the water level of power goes out

Are you planning to make a legitimate business out of it? IF not I don't see the expense as worth it. You can only sell so many frags on RC before they put the hammer down and stop you.

That makes sense. The only reason why I wanted the Biocube was so that I can shut off a few valves and make it a stand alone with its own filtration if I needed an emergency QT or hospital tank.

I also know of a guy that is selling one fairly cheap.

Interesting point. I didn't know there was a limit as to the number of frags you can sell on RC. I'm not interested in making this a business, but rather a learning experience with some extra cash for the hobby.

In all honesty, all the frags I've made in the past, I've traded with folks here or taken them to my LFS for credit. I'm not really interested in making money on it, but helping others out and sharing frags with the club members.

There is no official limit. Read rc user agreement u just can't have a business. It has to be hobby sales. I have a frag tank but really don't sell alot but it keep a my display clean looking

That makes sense. Thank you Roger. I'll start making some drawings try and make this a smart design.

I think the sump can handle the volume if I set the limit right.

I think I'll stop by FAOIS next weekend to run it by John and Chris to see if they have any ideas on the design to.

This is something I too thought about doing since I am in the middle of redoing mine. I too think a 20L would be ideal. I think the best way to do to it would be use a larger return pump and T off the return and into the frag tank. Then just have the frag tank drain right back into where the DT drains to. Worse comes to worse if you end up finding that you don't like/need the frag tank you could always turn it into a display refugium.

I have no idea of the limits. It used to seem like someone was keeping track of those selling frags and they would contact you saying you have been selling too much. Then it was stop or be banned. No idea what is going on now.

No offense about the user agreement but it sounds like as long as you are not legitimate and paying taxes you can sell as many corals as you want here. lol

I just put a DIY frag rack behind my rock work so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. And when it fills up, like it is right now, I'll unload them for salt money or trades. Most of them are oops frags, not looking to make a living.

But the real reason for this post is to add, I would be conscientious of how you word listings on here, CL, etc. For example, I would leave "aquacultured" out of the vocabulary. There's no need to make the FWC take a harder look at your activities. Just saying.
