IMO in the right conditions they split often. Feeding them several time a week along with a 10% water change usually yeilds a slit for me.

Here's my GBTA that I've had for 14 months now.

A few months ago under 2 96w PCs:

and here it is today under a 4x39 Tek T-5 fixture as of 8/01, post tank re-arrangement. It just split last week (but they've both moved closer together instead of apart for some reason):
