Show me your FOWLR with Macroalgae

Hey all

I am trying to dress up my fowlr tank--tired of looking at brown live rock.

I have a red coris wrasse, a blue tang and a zebra eel--will add more depending on macroalgae I can keep--don't want to get into coral.

Currently have VHO and NO lighting

Love to see your pics and hear suggestions!

Hey!

I dont have FOWLRs with macroalgae, I have Macro with FO! Depending upon the intensity of your lighting and your nutrient levels, there are several species of Caluerpa that will take ahold of your LR and never let go! LOL. Seriously, that's why Caluerpa is illegal in California. If it gets a good footing on a reef (or your LR) it will take over and choke out any corals. This is a danger reefers face if they keep Caluerpa in their refugiums. If it gets into their DT they have to pick it out immediately.

I happen to like Caluerpa spp. for its nutrient exporting properties. But there are tons of other Macroalgaes to choose from. The Rhodophytons are the most aesthetic. Those are the red algae. Check out the Macroalgae forum on here for a list of sites that sell macro and just browse. Lots of great stuff.

Mine is a little more "reefy" but I only keep aggressive fish. Really the only corals I have are mushrooms, polyps, and leathers, plus a few anemones.

Sweet Jarrod...I've always liked that tank.

Here are a few pix of some of ours that have been around:

We use live macro in most of our setups, but we rarely shoot FTS.

This is beautiful.

I am in the process of setting up something similar--tank is cycled and macro is in but the fish aren't due for a couple of weeks.

But I have a concern: all of my other tanks have refugia running on reverse photoperiods. For this tank I have no plans for a sump. So I'm worried about whether the macros will deplete the oxygen overnight and stress the fish.

Is anyone running a macro-packed fowlr without a refugium?

Anybody else keeping a big FOWLR with Macro? Pondering a 120g with this type of setup and would love to see more pics and specs.

What kind of lighting does everyone use? I have a 180 with just strip LEDs which is bright enough for the fish but am thinking I may need to go to t5 for macro algae.

What sizes of tanks with what types of fixtures?

All different sizes really, everything from a 10g to a 220g. I've always used eBay fixtures, and replaced the bulbs with quality brand bulbs like ATI. I've had really good luck with those fixtures, I had a ballast burn out on my 8 bulb fixture but it was a Phillips so I just ordered one directly from them and replaced it myself. Just to list the ones I can think of off the top of my head...

10g- 2x18w
28g bowfront- 4x24w
37g, 30"L - 8x24w staggered
60g cube - used same 30" fixture, 8x24w
90g- 6x54w, current set up
220g- 6x80w

I also had a PC fixture over a 20L that did pretty well.

The 10g, I don't have a shot of it filled in but the macro covered the sandbed when it was taken down

The 20L with PC lighting, again this is only about half of what it grew to. There is red macro in the right side that is hard to see because of the blue

The 220

Most current pic of the 90

With the exception of the 90 all those fts were not good representations of how the tanks looked when they filled in, the pictures were taken at the start of the tanks.
