For what it's worth, when we were in Fiji, we saw a zooanthellae-less BTA in a very shallow, high light area in a field of clones. The anemone was smaller and had shorter tentacles than the clones around it, but it was reactive, sticky and had a tight mouth. It was completely lacking zooanthellae and was clear enough to see that there wasn't a hint of brown.
