Show us the macro in your display tank!

Try searching the gallery.. or going back a few months on this forum. People have posted a few pictures here and there of macro in their tanks.

depends on what type of macro it is drBDC, i'd probably torch the rocks that had the invasive type of macro growth on it. my brother is battling caulerpa in his tank. told him it wasn't a good idea to put it in his display but he still did it.
i have some macro that aren't invasive in my display right now and are great for tank aesthetics.

Aha! We have pics. (I never have any luck with searches -- usually RC just tells me the feature's not available due to high server load.)
drBDC, doesn't the tang help? Bluenassarius, what type of macro? And do you have any pics? Any pics of your brother's tank?
I'm just exploring ideas for what I want a tank to look like. It's going to be a while till I can start my first marine aquarium, but I spend plenty of time dreaming about it!

The tangs are sooooo small. About an inch and a half. They do pick all day and leave strings instead of the full algae. Eventually they'll grow enough I "hope" they out eat the growth. Then I'll supplement nori. They're fat that's for sure. 
Then my blue will go to a large FOWLR but not alot of rock. I'll be able to get some non reefsafe fish for that tank. That's the reason for such a large sump on my specs is I had to anticipate that blue outgrowing my tank and I'll plumb it into the same sump. I guess it would turn into reef though as my frags need homes depending on the fish.

I am setting up a 65 gal FOWLR for a puffer and a wrasse soon,and was thinking of adding macro to help with water quality..and possibly some xenia to the glass...any thoughts?

I suppose the xenia makes a difference,but I only use it to export nutrients.I grow it high at the top of the glass,and every so many months I swipe most of it off with a credit card.I think it will look cool to have the macro,instead of just a bunch of rocks with nothing on them..plus it will do a job as well.yh132 said:Waterfaller1, is it a FOWLR any more if you add xenia??
It does seem like FOWLR and macros would go together well but it doesn't seem like people do it very often, unless I am mistaken. What's the reason for that?

The macros grew out of my original LR I started the tank with. I love plants/flowers anyway so encouraged their growth. I sell some at each of our local reef club meetings in the coral auction usually with a small portion of LS. Yes, the red in the upper right is a macro. Regular trimming is a must and I now have a yellow tang in another tank which I can feed excess macros or even move a whole rock in there for the tang to clean up if necessary. I love the look of macros with corals. I recently set up a 40 gal w/20 gal sump/fuge. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get the sump smaller and fuge bigger

Nothing against macro, but if I happen to find any growing in my display tank, I remove it to the fuge. I just don't like the look of it in the main tank.

I find this so interesting.. do most reefers not like macro in their displays? When I dive, I usually see more macro than coral.. Halimeda is even on the books for being the dominant carbonate sediment producer in some areas of the Pacific ahead of the corals. Its a prolific part of the ecosystem.
Reminds me of a few years back when I posted a dive picture of a royal gramma surrounded by a background of soft coral and macroalgae. I asked for an ID on the macro's if possible, and I got blasted by members on the board (not RC, another board). One guy seemed almost offended that I thought the plant life was pretty..

I think its beautiful..... but I just don't like the way it looks in the display. You should see my fuge though, I think I look at that even more then my display. I think macro is beautiful.. I just prefer it to be in the fuge 'is all.
