Sorry but based on fishbase, I assumed that the answers for the 2 pictures were correct, so just add one for the link

Ok, last "hint" to get the thread moving again, the fish in the link is the same species as one of the fish in the two pictures

I'm not sure what you are asking for here. The fish in the link is probably M. interstitialis based on the pointed anal fin.

Did you miss my pun? Too bad you didn't use M. microlepis, I coulda worked another pun in...as in "this thread is enough to make me gag".

I did catch the Scamp part. But M. interstitialis is not the same species Scamp is M. phenax. Yes the link is M. interstitialis but both species have pointed anal fins and elongated caudal rays

Folks,

Since this thread has stalled out, I'm going to post a new fish. I'm not positive on the ID of this myself - so it is sort of a twofer - a challenge to ID for you all, and (hopefully) some confirmation of what I think it is.
The history is that it arrived two days ago in a shipment from Japan. However, the shipper is a major wholesaler who has a station in Indonesia, and handles fish from around the world, so its origin cannot be determined. It is around 6" long.

Yes - thats what I had it tentatively identified as. The problem is that the language barrier between the shipper and myself is huge, so I can never be certain that their name for a given fish is accurate. In this case, it was listed as a "cocktail wrasse" - presumably derived from "cockerel wrasse" which is a different species: Pteragogus enneacanthus

Some people are telling me this is a hybrid but I was thinking young A. Leucocheilus. Any suggestions?

That surgeonfish is indeed Acanthurus leucocheilus. Good guess, that is not an easy one to identify, especially at that small size. Be prepared for that fish to get very large.

Definitely a Pteragogus of some sort. DD has a slightly different variation of it. He's been there a long time. I don't understand why because I think they are a cool looking fish.
