shrimp q?

okay so every pepermint shrimp i buy goes belly side up on me. I acclimate very slow and this last one took over 4 hours to do so. still when i place them in the tank they die with in a few hours. water is good ph is 8.2 calcium is over 520ppm its a mini reef with lots of coral and a clam. any ideas as to whats going on? help please thanks

Could be a number of reasons. It could be your "supply", you treated your tank with some sort of medication that contained copper, you have a shrimp predators, or something else.

Do you see any other "pods" like amphipods, copepods...?

I do have pods havent seen a bunch of them in awhile. I do see worms in the sand bed and climbing on the tank walls. one possible shrimp predator but thats neither confirmed or denied. corals and clam are doing well, the zoos have been acting funny lately as in i lost a whole colony that covered a rock and the gsp just wont and have never taken off in my tank, think i might be lucky there. I havent added any medcine to my tank either.

Don't hold back what is the shrimp predator? Explain what you actually do while your acclimating the shrimp. Do you dose iodine? Many people are under the false belief that iodine dosage is needed for shrimp to molt, but it is unnessesary and has never been written by any legitimate researcher. Infact, too much iodine can "force" the shrimp to molt to early. Over time this is fatal!

What exaclty are your amm, trites, trates reading at, and what test kit are you using? How are you acclimating? Buying from a LFS or online shipper(how long is transportation)?

What is the possible shrimp predator?

If the tank had copper it in the corals/clam wouldn't be there.

the possible predator is a rumored tiny mantis shrimp everyones best guess if it is one that its smaller than an inch. the shrimp i was adding is was well over an inch in length. acclimation is several hours adding watter from my tank while taking out water from the bag the shrimp is in. how i have been instructed to acclimate them. i do dose iodine, once a week for my corals. everything else i place in the tank has no issues just hte bloody shrimp. my blue leg hermits i just toss in no acclimation they do great!! i buy them all at a great lfs that is taking out thier fish dept much to their and my dismay.

If you have a mantis shrimp it doesn't matter how big or small another shrimp is, it's going to kill them. It won't matter how long you acclimate either, it will strike and kill the shrimp quickly.
