shrinking chaeto?

I added some chaeto (3-4 oz) to my sump about 3 months ago to control nitrates. The good news is nitrates have dropped to 0. But, I'm also noticing that the chaeto appears to be shrinking - there just seems to be less of it than when I first got it.

Any ideas what would cause this? Given the nitrates are getting consumed, I would expect the chaeto to grow, not shrink.

Is this stuff like a solid ball of stuff? I bought some micro from my LFS, but they didnt tell me what it was. It looks dark green and it is like a solid ball. Not hard, but solid. I will tryand take a pic latter and post it thanks.

What lights, and how much flow.

I've noticed that my chaeto needs a dash of iron suppliment when it starts to shrink.

When mine shrank it was from inadequate light so I moved it to the main tank for awile and voila!
