sicce question

Just an easy question about sicce's, I wanna set one up as a recurc on my skimmer. What size uniseals do I need for the inlet and outlet? 3/4 inch and 1 inch? or both 3/4 inch? Or would I be better off just using it as the only pump? The skimmer I want to mod is the marineland in-sump rated for 300 gallons it has a maxi-jet (new-jet) NJ-3000 that mounts on the bottom, the skimmer dimensions are...

Body diam. 6 inches

Body hight. 11.5 inches

Neck diam. 2.5 inches

Neck hight. 7 inches

Right now I'm waiting for a replacement ceramic shaft because when I got the skimmer from a hobbyist it was missing but should be here monday-ish. In the mean time I'm running it without the shaft (the rep from marineland told me that there would be no problem running it like that) But I have it running to help break it in cos I cleaned it with vinegar as soon as I got it home

Ya I would definetly step up the neck dia. To a 4 or 5"......I'm not really to fimiliar with the sicce pumps I perfer laguna pumps myself but they would blow the lid off that thing...lol

I suspect you will overflow that 2.5 inch neck with a Sicce.

Even if it is setup as a recurc and the water hight in the skimmer is adjusted 4" from the bottom of the neck?

My apologies for being an obvious complete and udder moron :sad1:

As it is right now it doesn't skim anything, and barely pulls any air. I'm pretty sure thats because the impeller is just walking and bobbling around inside the pump being that it doesnt have the ceramic shaft yet.

Ya that's a big factor and prolly destroying the impeller while its at it.....running recirc or not the neck is a major componet on a skimmer it will pull a lot better with a wider neck....my skimmer has a 6.5" neck 10"tall.....works like a champ.....

Someone (I think it was Hahnmeister) once posted a loose guideline to how much air a particular neck size can handle. I can tell you that the Sicce pulls nearly a 1:1 ratio or air:water. You will not have a problem pulling air with the Sicce pump. In fact, I think you will pull too much and cause the skimmer to overflow - regardless of whether you recirc the skimmer or not. Off the top of my head, I think you will want atleast a 4 inch neck to handle the output of a Sicce PSK2500.

On a side note, if you do take on a project where you are recircing your skimmer with a Sicce pump, DO NOT run it externally! The Sicce pumps tend to run on the hot side, if they are not submerged in water they will overheat and destroy the pump.

thanks for the replies, aybe I'll just try mesh modding the NJ-3000 when i get the new impellor and shaft and see how good it works after a few weeks.
again thanks for taking the time to post
