sick foxface

I noticed my foxface wasnt out today when i woke up, and he didnt come out until about 5 o'clock. Now that he is out, he is acting very strange. He cant swim correctly, when he does swim he spins around and it did seem that he was trying to eat food off the sandbed, but didnt touch any mysis shrimp. at another point he just was sitting ontop of the sandbed for about 15mins before moving again. He looks perfectly normal, but he is acting as if he is drunk.

Is he doomed? or is there anyway i can help him. Hes been in the DT for about 2 weeks now

If he is doing a lot of flicking, or rubbing against rock/substrate it is possible that he has a parasite. You should be able to see it though.

It may also be a possibility that if it looks normal but isn't swimming well that it has a swim bladder infection.

Is it eating at all in the tank?
Do you have another tank that you could move it into?
What are your tank parameters?

Try to maintain a good diet and keep watching it. Maybe even try some garlic in its diet. You can buy fresh garlic, blend it up, and soak its food in the puree. I think that would be more effective than buying something like garlic guard.

It's hard to say for sure what it is, but a healthy diet will be important for now.

params are ph 8.0 ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 0

he looks perfectly normal, and doesnt seem to be rubbing against rocks or the substrate. Yesterday he was eating and looked fine in the tank, today when he came out, he looked like he was trying to eat off the sandbed, but wouldnt eat any mysis, which is all i could get him to eat so far (wouldnt touch algae clips or flakes)

I dont have another tank to move him into today, if he is still around tomorrow, i will buy a tank and hob filter for him.

and the LFS is closed monday and tuesday so i cant get any help from them on this :(

just have to hope he makes it till tomorrow so i can set up a tank for him, and hope i can find time

When he eats the mysis, does he go to the surface to eat it (or has he ever), or does it always wait till the shrimp falls down in front of it?
The fact that it's swimming really weird makes me think it is a swim bladder infection. But usually you only see those in cases where the fish is eating flakes.
I would still get some garlic and/or vitamins (selcon or the like) and supplement the mysis with it. If it is an infection it will important that it has a good diet if it is to make it. But I guess that would only work if it is actually eating.
Sorry but I can't really think of anything else that it maybe other than an infection (and I would think swim bladder infection because it's problem with swimming). Hopefully someone else can chime in if they have a better answer.

no, he never went to the surface to get the mysis, always waited for it to come near him.

the lights are off, so hes hiding now, hopefully tomorrow he wont be worse

Thanks for the help tho

update: he didnt make it through the night :( all the other fish seem to be happy as can be tho. So i have no clue what could have done the foxface in :( i really liked him, he was cleaning my sandbed for me

thanks for the help tho

I'm sorry to hear that.

It had some weird symptoms and I still don't know exactly what it could have been. I don't know that something could have poisoned it or stung it or something like that. Or maybe it was an infection.

Anyway, I hope you have better luck in the future.

That's too bad.
I lost one last year when I first tried keeping one.
Mine did just about the same thing yours did.It became listless and didn't eat enough.I found it getting blown around by the PHs and the next morning it was dead.I personally believe it was cyanide caught.

what did/do you have for flow in the tank?

are you using glass tops?

no glass tops ans 2 korala 3's +hob skimmer
maybe he could have been cyanide caught?

well, i ordered and got my new foxface in the mail from liveaquaria (but not the frogspawn:mad: ) yesterday, and i can already say this little guy is eating much more than the last one, even saw him tasting a snail!

I can actively see this one eating off the rocks nonstop (even eating the hair algae) and he went after the mysis shrimp more than the last one, but didnt swim to the top for it, he swam around grabbing them. but still wont touch the algae on the clip.

The one that died i never really saw him go at the rocks, but did eat the caulpera(sp?) and seemed like he was eating off the sandbed. he was in my tank for only about 2 weeks

Hoping the same thing doesnt happen to this guy, but he already seems healthier and hungrier than the previous one!
