Sick Green Serpent Star

#harlequin shrimp

On the subject however, He's saying chop the injured limb off and let it grow back as echinoderms can regenerate missing limbs and if the vital organs are present missing bodies.

I have no idea what you're saying! There is no injured limb. His disk started getting these white spots on it and then I guess the fish started feeding on him. It looks like it's healing now that the fish can't get him - I tried feeding him but he didn't eat so I'll just keep an eye on him. And yes, I meant harlequin shrimp, not crab.

I'm saying what the OP was trying to say.

Echinoderms (starfish etc) can regenerate missing limbs, and if the limb has vital organs attached they can grow missing bodies. The OP was thinking if you cut the leg off a new one would grow and the original one would die while the clone lives. However that wouldn't work for the reason you've described. I personally couldn't do it myself cutting starfish... and it would be a pointless atempt anyway and not worth it.

My current avatar (3/31/2014) is of a harlequin shrimp.

Since the green serpent illness is so widespread, I thought I would give you an update. For those that won't read the thread from the beginning, my green serpent started getting whitish colored spots on his disk. The fish started feeding on these spots until he had a massive hole. I did not realize the fish were doing this, as soon as I saw it I put him in a fishless tank in my system. He stayed in one spot for a long time and would not eat. He then disappeared and I did not see him for the last 4 months. I saw him today, his disk is completely healed, there still remains a discolored spot, and he has lost the ends of most of his legs. For the first time in a long time however, he ate. So if you have one that's getting discolored -- get him away from fish in a spot where he can just hide. Worked for my guy -- maybe it will work for yours....

I had a different interpretation of clownfish18's message yesterday. I wondered if the suggestion to cut off the legs was to help him heal - as mine lost the end of the legs during this healing process. The message is open to interpretation and was never clarified.
