Sick Leather

My leather has a hole and you can see all the way down through the base. What's happening...

Regards,

Dawn

Do you have a pic? Did the hole just appear or is there rotting tissue around the hole? What are your parameters?

I uploaded a pic in my gallery. I think that you can just click on my gallery and find it there. I have tried several times to upload this without success. I can email them directly to you if you would like.

Thanks for your help...

Have you look at it during the night to see if something is eating it. When ever my leather has problems I increase flow and use a turkey baster to blow off any dead tissue. If it doesn't improve I dip it in Lugol's for 10 to 15 minutes. Hope this helps. Good luck!

At night I have not seen anything picking at it. And of course nothing in the day time either. As you had originally asked, just one day that whole was in it and looked like it was disintegrating. Usually it has it's tentacle's in. I don't see any dead tissue. What is Lugol's. In order for me to dip it in anything I would have to peel it off of the rock that it us attached to. Is it o.k. to do that? Were you able to view it through my gallery? Have you come up with what kind of leather it is?

Thanks again!

Yes, I did look at it but I'm not familiar with that type of leather. If the decaying has stop just keep an eye on it. Mine always heals and reopens. Lugol's Iodine is what I use to dip coral's. you can buy it at most LFS. Just follow the directions for dipping. I probably won't remove it from the rock it is on now. because it is already stressed. Can you remove the rock it is on?

I think that it has stopped decaying. The rock is a little big and it is also attached to a smaller one next to it. But I can try. Also it looks like the little flower tips are gone. Maybe they have been nipped at by the butterflies we put in to get rid of the majano, but like I said I never see anything near it. The seem to completely ignore it during the day. All we can do is hope!

Are you talking about the polyps when you said "flowers"? If so, they will come out when the coral heals a bit. This may take some time. Be patient. Leathers can be finicky at times.

Kind of like waving hand coral, like tiny little flowers on the end of oh, about 1 to 1 1/2 inch stems I guess you could call them. My husband says that he checked the iodine levels and that everything in the tank was doing good. I don't know if that has anything to do with the Lugol's that you were speaking of earlier. Thanks again for all of your encouragement.
