Hello

I have a male pony that has GBD. He has had it for a week or so. I was told to put him in a QT tank with Triple Sulfa. He has had 4 days of the med. and today will be the 2nd 25% water change. He still has the gas in his pouch & below his pouch. Its not getting better. He is off of his food & getting very skinny.

I watch him very well & when he lets loose i help him get hitched again. Is there somthing else i can do for him ? The gas in his tummy i can get out but the other bubble of gas wont as it looks like its under the skin & unber his pouch. He only has the one Gas bubble other than that he is ok. What can i do for him ? He isnt eating much if at all now.

Help Please

18 looks & no help for my pony. Someone please help. This horse is a fighter but he & I need some help badly. Is there some other medicne or somthing else i can do.

Thank You

Unfortunately internal gbd is very hard to cure. I have had some success with Diamox. It is a drug made for humans and requires a script to get. If you can find some quickly I would dose 125 mg for a 10 gallon tank for 3 days in a row with large water changes between doses. If you lower the water level in your tank and have lots of taller hitches your horse will be able to hitch even when he is floating. This will help him to start eating again. I hand fed my barb with live shrimp to keep his strength up.

Good luck with him. Bringing him back from this illness will be hard. If you need more info go to one of the seahorse sites and post in the emergency forum. Or PM any ??? to me personally.

Thank you Bruce for your help.

I will see if i can get some tomarrow first thang. I will also drive to get some live gost shrimp.

Thanks again.

Hey my time here right now is 1:31am & the post i just did says 7:24am. Do you know how i can fix it. It is 6hr's fast.

Hi Bruse

OK i got his med's. Now i need to know if it can be used with the Triple Sulfa as it in the water with him now or do i need to clean out the tank & start with all new water with now Sulfa in it. He is in a 5g QT tank so its not hard to do. I just need to know it the medician's can be used togather or not.

Thanks again Bruce

Need2no,
What temperature is your hospital tank water?
Also, what species is your seahorse?
Try to gradually lower your water temperature a couple of
points lower then the recommended "low temp" for them.
I have H. erectus, that I keep at 72*, 74* max during the
breeding season.
Theoretically, I would lower my temp to *68-70* max.
I would not mix Diamox with any other meds, I'd recommend a
100% water change.
Be sure you keep really good water circulation going, using an
air line to produce large bubbles, large & strong enough to
ripple the water.
If he's taking the ghost shrimp, gutload them with some crushed
Spirulina flakes or algae paste in a couple of tablespoons of
warm water. Let cool, crush up a small piece of the Diamox
& let the ghost shrimp (or adult Brine shrimp) gorge on this
mixture, then feed them out to your seahorse.

Hi Lisa

I dont have the paste or the SPirulina my fish store isnt very good.
I do have the Zoe by Kent but thats it. I will do a 100% WC & add the med. I also have Garlic so i will add that as well as the Zoe. I have to go get the shrimp in a min. as it is on the other end of town & i wanted to ck here before i went .The water is 72 / 74. i can get it lower but i will have to turn the light off. & at night i dont know how low it will go. I will keep a eye on it tonight. Is it ok to have no light for him ?

I have a air pump going that works very well . I left the stones off so it would have big bubbles.

Ok It time to give him day 2 of the Diamox. You said a big WC inbetween each dose so how big is big ? 1/3 a 1/2 or 3/4 ? He is hitching but not eating yet. I have the live shrimp & some of the flake food Lisa said get. I will feed the shrimp the flake food soked in garlic & Zoe. They dont have any paste in town. Please let me know how much on the water change.

Thanks
