Sierra Vista Shop

Do you guys think there is enough interest down here for a shop? The only two shops I know of here no longer carry anything relating to saltwater or reef tanks. I am interested in starting up a business and wanted to see what ya'll thought. Thnx...Brandon

hey if you got the money to do it, you should.

i would try to get a customer base first or your going be using all your money in trying to support your business.

Start a tank cleaning service, and expand from there! thats what i think.

There is a massive shop in my home town that started out of a garage attached to their house. Was thinking something like that. Like you said a maintenance business and some sort of setup in my garage to get things going.

I've thought about doing the same thing. Heck even when P@t's W@st was in SW, their selection sucked. The problem would be that SV P&Z gives all independent busnesses such a hassle that alot of folks give up.If a big chain store comes in, they will change every zoning ordinance to accomodate, but they scr@w small businesses. Just ask Richardson, of Richardson Motors.

I spent from 1999-2006 in SV and at one point tried to get a local club up and running. The sad thing is that there isn't really enough interest or cash in town to make it a viable source of income. We would just drive to Phoenix metro area to get the livestock that we really wanted and the dry goods were mail order. If you try to get a store rolling I wish you luck. I agree that the best approach down there is to get a strong maintenance business started and work from there. It is funny, the guys around where I live complain about shops all the time.....they have no idea.....try living in SV....

Thanks for the replys, I am looking heavily towards a maintenance business and see what I can grow it into. Dave...there is not one store in town now with anything saltwater. Pets West got rid of all thiers...not that what they had was ever hardly worth looking at.

I meet with the Tucson folks for inverts. I purchase from SWF for fish. I would definitely buy local, if I had the opportunity. The main problem with a SW maintenance company is that we don't have very many large offices that keep SW tanks. thepircs, why would you move from heaven to a frozen h@ll?

I wanted to get the kids closer to Grandma in PA and the job offer that I got was for basically double the money in a lower cost of living area. The weather is horrible during the winter and that is when I miss the area. The schools are a ton better so the family will be staying here at least until they get out of high school. We have a couple of diseased local shops and have to travel to Syracuse or Rochester to get quality livestock. The nice thing is that there are a ton of guys on RC in the area that get together and swap all the time. I have been able to collect a pretty good coral collection for a fraction of the cost.

I tried to get 5-6 service accounts down there to justify rolling a truck every few weeks with a large tank. At one point there was enough to get it done but not in the last 3 years. Maybe once the war is over there will be a more stable military presence there. Lots of military folks gravitate to SW. My guess is the fact that Pets west pulled the secion is because it was no longer viable so I would not risk it. But if you do I will be glad to help you out any way I can....

Wow it would be nice if there was a Sierra Vista shop. I'm in Douglas and it sucks driving the 2 and a half hours to Tucson. I'm much rather drive to Sierra Vista if there was a quality saltwater store there.

What happened to Bruno's in Douglas? I've never been there, but I know I've called there a few times in the last year.

if someone opens a shop in sierra vista and wants to hire someone i would gladly relocate back there. my family is there and i have been trying to find a way to move back, oklahoa sucks

i remember pets west and i agree there selection of salt was lousy, i could not even get them to order anything for me. i once wanted to start a shop there but could never get any financial backing to open one. if i could get the financial backing i would relocate and open one myself

now that i have found some sierra vista reefers i have a question, do any of you know any of the sierra vista harly riders? if so please let smokey know i said hi (he is my dad and is a bouncer at the sorry gulch sallon ;) )

Your right Oklahoma does suck! At least that part of it. My Dad and his family were from Healdton (just West of Ardmore) and I spent many summers around there. It's pretty dead now. I visited last Thanksgiving. I grew up in OKC and it wasn't bad. Get yourself outta there and quick!:D

LOL, few things stopping me

1. lack of funds to move
2. lack of funds to start household up or rent a place when i got back to sierra vista
3. lack of job once i did get back to sierra vista LOL

of course i have family in sierra vista and tuscon (of course they never did want to help me out)
