I'm pretty bummed out that this one lost its color. Is there a way to get it back? More light? Less light?

Here it is on July 22nd :

..and on February 2nd :

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Looks like in the first pic you had more actinis.

I did, but the rings are gone. The polyps are not much bigger than they were. If anything, on the rest of my lords the rings have grown thicker as the polyp has gotten bigger.

Anyone else have this morph with current pics?

Peace,

Chip

The lighting doesn't appear to be nearly the same. Hard to tell if it is even the same coral. I think you have a lighting issue not a color issue.

MORE LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!

MORE LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!

Without a doubt, MORE LIGHT! He needs like 20k halides or 10ks at least, and VHO or any ACTINIC. Slower growth but lots of color. If you changed your bulbs recently and they are not the same brand that could have done it! Feeding him in addition to lighting changes will help with color some, but that actually will help more with growth. MORE LIGHT and don't look back man, you'll thank me later(2-3 months)

thanks,

Rick

P.S. I have 2X250watt XM 20ks and 2 URI 110watt VHO Actinics on my 55 gallon reef!

MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, light man, have fun!

I would try feeding it with suppliments such as selcon (ect.) to see if that helps. Be carefull not to bleach it with too much light.

One can never have too much light! my 55 gallon has 2X250watts XM halides, and 2X110 watt URI VHOs actinics. 720watts on a 55 gallon, still not enough!

thanks,

rick

ummm... one can have too much light... I wouldn't say that if i didn't experience that before.

shade it to see how the colors come back. it's an lps, and they generally aren't light hungry like sps are.

Granted, those pictures aren't an accurate coloration progression b/c I went from 20k halides to 50/50 PC, but I have noticed the lack of color and loss of thick rings on the piece before I moved it, so my question still stands.

I'll try and find a more recent pic under the 20ks and post it.

Peace,

Chip

Found one...it's a feeding picture from September. The nice turquoise rings and inward stripes are completely gone on it.

if you went from 20ks to pcs then i retract my statement. i think they would look better under 20k halides than pcs.

i wouldn't go blasting them under 400watters though...

I'm sorry, I must be confusing.

I just recently (in the last week) moved them to PCs because I downsized the tank from 40g to 10g due to my upcoming move to SC from NY. They've only been under the PCs for 3 days. They lost the color well before that.

Peace,

Chip

oh ok, well where were they in your tank before? high? low? remember you have much less wattage in your tank now, so I guess you will know if they will color up with less wattage. try them low and then bring them up if they don't change.

BTW when are you moving to SC? Are you bringing that really nice chalice of yours???? If so, PM me since I have some diff ones to trade with you.

They started out on the sandbed, then I moved them halfway up. When I set the 40 gallon tank back up I suppose I'll keep them on the sand again. We'll see what they do in the 10 gallon until then.

I should be moved into my temporary place in SC by April 1st. The fiancee will remain up here until her son is out of school & the house and business are sold.

Which chalice were you talking about?

If you got as a frag from a captive colony then obviously should try to match lighting from where it came from if you want it to stay as much the same as possible.

If this was a wild colony that simply got fragged up not long after captivity then basically you never really know what your going to get until in captivity for a while as nature just can't be duplicated.
This hold true especially for acropora but can definately see it as well for many non-captive LPS.

This is why I never pay top $$ for a certain color morph unless it has been in captivity for a while and know a little better what to expect.
