silicone for tank

They sell a silicone that is made for tanks. I don't know the diffrences but I wouldn't try anything else.

Yes, Essop they do sell silicone for tanks, most of it is the same as 100% silicone. If it is 100% silicone, clear and has no mildewcide/antibacterial stuff it will work fine.

Many years ago I made the mistake of using clear, 100% silicone to make a breeding cave for a pair of Cyphotilapia frontosa (very expensive cichlids). The water turned cloudy and I almost lost the pair. If it does not say "for aquarium use" clearly on the tube, don't use it. All-Glass sells silicone - I'll bet Barry can order it - or you can get aquarium silicone from Fosters/Smith, Pet Solutions, etc. That's the only silicone I'd use.

BTW - I think Silicone 2 has an anti-mold ingredient in it so you can use it in bathtubs. I can't remember exactly what the anti-mold stuff was, but I THINK it's arsenic. And yes, I'm serious.

I used silicone I to put my sump together with no ill affects and I'll bet you that if you could find out, most of the "aquarium use" silicones on the market are just repackaged 100% clear silicone. Read the ingredients to see if this is true.

100% Silicone II

100% Silicone II

I read a post on another forum that said 100% silicone II is what you need to use. I'm getting ready to build a sump and that is what I bought. I'll let you know how it goes. If i can find that thread I will post a link, but the guy stressed "100% Silicone II".

Home Depot and Lowes both carry an aquarium silicone. That's what I've used. Wouldn't dare try anything else.

Can't find the thread that talked about Silicone II. Anyway in my UNPROFESSIONAL opinion, any 100% silicone that isn't for bathrooms (that's the one that usually has the anti-mold stuff in it) will work. I plan on letting it set up for several days before I put the sump in use.

Please don't anyone take offense at this - I really don't want to make anyone mad.

A reef hobbyist will spend $500 - $1,000 on lighting, another $500 on a good skimmer, $1,000 on the tank and stand, $200 on a refugium or sump, $800 on wavemakers, dosers, reactors, kalkwasser, etc., and $900 for livestock.

Yet, we would risk everything to save $3 on silicone?

By what I've researched you need pure silicone rubber. Ge says you can't use silicone II and they dont recoomend any of there products Ace hardware carries the pure silicone or at least thier website says they do. home depot and lowes neither had aquarium silicone and couldn't tell me anything to use Just letting you guys know what I've found out

I believe it was a GE product which almost killed my breeders many years ago.
Barry or Ron can order you some AQUARIUM silicone from All-Glass, or they may have it in stock now.

Or you can go to:
drs.fostersmith.com

The item is #TD-114823

It is $8.79 plus shipping. It's cheaper to get it from JoMars.

Guess this just goes to show you that while there is a wealth of information on this site, not all info is accurate.

Agreed that it isn't worth the risk for a few bucks regardless of popular opinion.

Just to let you guys know Barry, himself is the person that informed me that 100% silicone was OK to use for a sump. Yes, he can order you the same thing from his supplier and it will cost about $8.00-10.00 a tube sold as "aquarium silicone". I think it would probably be better for you to order it considering there is mixed feelings on this topic. Just as there is on almost every topic, what works for some might not work for all. If you are going to buy "aquarium silicone" I would buy it in a tube you can put in a gun because it is much easier to apply then the stuff in the small tubes and you are going to need quite a bit to put a sump together. I also suggest you wear vinyl gloves when you put the silicone on your sump and tape the areas you do not want to get silicone on. This makes the silicone much easier to apply and clean up.

I'm with phljess on this one. When I re-seal a tank or something like that I use the highest grade 100% silicone without anti-mold additives I can get and I have never had any problems at all.

Same here. 100% silicone is simply that 100% silicone. If anything else is added it would have to be listed as an ingredient.

and there will always be different opinions and experiences. In the end just research and do what you feel comfortable with.
fwiw our local fish guru is the one that told me it was safe to use ;)
