Silicone not drying.

Not for silicone, but the same issue - I was talking with my LFS owner a while back and he routinely gets test kits from his supplier that are 6-12mos past their expiration date. He would send them back if he noticed it, but it's buyer beware on a lot of this stuff - I'm sure the sellers would just as soon not spend time checking dates and hope it's either good or that the unsuspecting buyer doesn't notice.

I purchased the expired silicone from my local Grainger in Fort Lauderdale. It was roughly 3 1/2 years old. In all fairness, they had to go searching in the back before they sold it to me. A red flag should have gone up to be when the first tube I bought was hardened all the way through. The second tube I bought was half hardened. I wasn't aware that silicone and other materials can go bad like that. Lesson learned. It bothers me though that a hardware store would keep an expired batch 2-3 years past its expiration.

Doesn't silicone get lumpy and bad if it is ever frozen?thought I read that somewhere...

Hard to get silicone to freeze when the brittle point is around -60°C (-75°F)

I just looked this up again, because my memory is not always so good, so I have to make a correction to a statement I made earlier: The shelf life of RTV100 series silicones is 12 months from date of shipment from the plant, if stored below 25°C. Refrigeration really is not needed but can't hurt either. So as I said before, if the date code is over a year ago, pass on it...

Yes when I had a Pet Store this was the not unusual. Only that goes for all products. Dog food was a winn that way with two many sources for different brands. Source A would replace anything free past the due date. and 90% of the time there was 6 months or longer before it was expired. Source B would not replace it for expiration date but only agrued that you should have not bought as much. 25% of the time what they shipped was expirired and I had to rufuse if right off the truck. The only reason I dealt with that suplier is they had exclusive distribution rights for the most popular barnd of dog food. Even though it was not the best.
