can I just use what they sell in a pet store to silicone the baffles into my sump? going to get a 30 gallon aquarium as a sump and silicone in plexiglass for the baffles, whatever the pet store has work for this correct?

Yeah..I believe as long as it's aquarium silicone and it's allowed to cure for 24 hours you'll be ok, although, somewhere in the back of my mind, I could have sworn I read something about silicon leaking silicates though, can anyone confirm? Thanks.

Not sure about the silicates.

I've had poor results with the silicone aquarium sealant from the LFS. Maybe it was just old. I've had better results with G.E. Silicone II for windows and doors from home depot.

When 'gluing' baffles in, you may want to use some fine sand paper to scuff the edges where the silicone will be. It should grab better this way.

I was just at lowes and got my baffles all cut out for me out of 1/4" acrylic, was looking at the ge silicone II for windows and doors (there are a couple btw, colors) it said on back not to use for aquariums.. so is it safe to use in your sump?

The window and door stuff is OK. The kitchen and bath is not. I know it says 'not for aquarium use' on it. I think this is a liability issue (thanx to too many lawyers in this country). I use it exclusively, and have had no problems with it.

Uhm..depends on why they say it's not for use in aquariums. Maybe it's the strength of it. But then again, I read articles of baffles giving way. I just built everything out of acrylic and used acrylic cement to fuse everything together, leak proof for 2 yrs using 1/8" Acrylic..=X

Use GE silicone I Window and Door, not II,
II has a higher VOC content ...52% I think
where I has a VOC less than 32%, and the strength is the same between adhereing to glass. I can't remember what VOC stands for, I just remember that aquarium silicones had a VOC content less than 35%.

I used the GE type II for bath & kitchen to reseal my 135 gal tank. what should I do? Should I remove it and reseal it with GE type I?

from what I gather in many different threads now, that people use GE type I and II window and door or bath and kitchen and noone has problems with any of em.

good to hear someone has no problems using the type II for bath/kitchen. I'm about to fill the tank with water this weekend so i'm glad i don't have to reseal it.

From what I've heard, the bathroom one has arsenic or something in it to prevent mildew growth. I wouldn't want that in my tank.
Also, silicone usually sticks better to smooth surfaces like glass, which is why I would not suggest sanding it prior to application. I took an AGA apart once and noticed that all of the glass edges were not even ground (as plate is usually sold), I figured that this is further evidence that smooth I better.
There were some threads about that warning awhile back and it was believed to be due to marketing. All Glass has a deal, where that warning placed on the label, so that their product will sell (even though itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s the same thing and supplied by the same people). I paid more and used aquarium, just to be safe though :)
