Simple Automation

I want very simple automation and am having trouble deciding between RKL and an Apex Jr. All i can find about these things is customer service related / for sale posts.

I want the heaters to shut off if stuck on. I want float alarms for a high water level to shut off the return pump. The lights to turn on and off at a specific time. Thats it. No dosing pumps, no ATO. I dont even need network capabilities. I just want the heaters and pumps to shut off if there is a problem / sound an alarm.

Can i EASILY do this with a RKL. I already researched the customer service problems etc, i know about that. I just want to know if i buy a used RKL for a good deal if I can get what i want out of it. Im really not at a point to spend the $400 on an APEX system.

Sounds like the rkl would be your best bet considering price. And it can still do far more than you are asking.

Ranco temp controller for heater - $50
Digital timer - $10
Autotopoff dual switch - $30

As for your question yes, either one will work just fine.

If you are technically oriented and have the resources, an Allen Bradley Micrologix 1100 PLC combined with a Maple HMI works very well. I have mine controlling heat exchanger, LED lighting, feeding, pumps, and water changes.

That is certainly more than simple automation.
I had also looked into the Rasberry Pi thing a while back but it seems that has hit a major roadblock and is far beyond my technical prowess.
