simple yet finding it difficult to do question

Sorry I sent you on a wild goose chase. I just read the manual and your first config was right. Its possible your ISP is blocking anything below Port 1000. And that is why you were not able to get to it.

I'm trying to find my linksys to pull up the config. It might be port forwarding where you can map internal 192.168.1.50:80 (http) to external http://1.2.3.4:5432

If I can find it I will check the config and the firmware version.

jleichtman - I really appreciate your help - I guess now I know what it feels like when I explain how a DC works or why certain roles should be on certain servers..

thanks!

Do you know if you have a static or dynamc IP? If its dynamic, I think you'll need to go to www.dyndns.com and set up a free account. If its static, you'll need to know if its a private or public IP address. If its a public address, you should be good to go once you;ve mapped a port to the AC. If is a private static IP, I'm not sure but you may have to change ISP's since I'm not sure it can be done with a private static IP.

Its DHCP - so that would be dynamic -

man - I think I would rather chase down ghost DNS entries or fixing VPNs...

Well I pulled out my 54G over a year ago and replaced it with a full blow Cisco router :) I haven't spent any time playing with home routers since then.

Well I think you have to do the dyndns.com thing to access the AC from the internet with a dynamic IP address. I have a static IP so I've never done the dyndns thing but others have done it that way....good luck.

I have a 2801 sitting on my desk at work as i am finally going to CCNA training in December - if work wasn't so crazy right now, I'd be tapping on it - just got a CSU-DSU card so I can plug into one of our T-1's...

By using the IP address you aren't dealing with DNS issues yet. Once you make it work with the IP address then you can worry about getting a DynDNS name.

Don't add layers until its working. Keep it Simple.

From the Manual.

Note: Some ISPs block incoming port 80 requests, so you you will have to use a different external port number.
In this case you would configure your router to route a different incoming port like 4567 (or any other 4 digit
number) to port 80 of the AquaController's IP address. If this is the case in your router's port forwarding, or
UPnP section configure the external port would be 4567, internal port 80, and the internal IP address of the
AquaController. If your isp blocks port 80 then you would need to enter the address as
http://123.45.67.111:4567 - substitute your internet IP address for 123.45.67.111.

Where is the latest firmware and how can you tell which firmware you have?

You can get the beta firmware from there: http://www.neptunesys.com/manuals.htm

The option to change the http port should be somewhere in the setup menu. Choose 4567, for example and reboot.

Also - can you explain what you mean by the "WAN" side of the router so we are both on the same playing field?

The WAN side of your router is the side connected to your cable or dsl modem. The LAN side is your private network behind the router/firewall.

If you installed the beta firmware on the ACIIIpro and changed the http port to 4567, also change the router's port forwarding information to:

[Application], [Start], [End], [Protocol], [IP], [Enable]
http, 4567, 4567, Both, 50, 'checked'

-L

Edit: I just read your post about it working with DMZ. Your ISP is not blocking port 80 and you should not have to change the default http port. Try my original suggestion and REBOOT the router:
[Application], [Start], [End], [Protocol], [IP], [Enable]
http, 80, 80, Both, 50, 'checked'

Also, make sure the ACIIIpro is correctly configured (especially for the gateway, it could throw off the NAT in the router).

In your last post, you said you got it working with DMZ on.

That rules out the possibility of your ISP blocking port 80. Try my first port forwarding instructions and reboot the router. Also, check the ACIIIpro network settings.

You should not need to upgrade your ACIII firmware.

I don't see the directions for updating the firmware - ?

Would the gateway be the ISP's or the one that the router is giving via DHCP?

The gateway IP is your router LAN's IP (e.g. 192.168.1.1)

Example:

Network: 192.168.1.0
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
ACIII IP: 192.168.1.50

Congratulations Patrick! I've been trying to get mine on-line for the past 2-weeks with countless hours of frustration. I just found an article that talks about VPN client causing problems so I'm going to check that tonight. I'm jealous you got your running so quickly!

doug,

Don't thank me - it was laurentm and Joshua that pointed me in the right direction. It turned out that I had the settings correct, however L pointed out that in order for the port forwarding to work, I had to bounce the router. Then, everything was working. Do you have a DMZ on your router - once I used that it showed me that the router could forward the port and that is when we got things working.

Best of luck - come on someone - chime in here and help Doug!
