single fish for my prop tank?

hi people. been here in spirit for a while, but haven't posted.
meanwhile i'd like opinions.

i have just set up a 30 breeder for a prop/frag tank. it's plumbed into my exisitng 300 gallon TV system.
i'd like a single fish for it. i put a 6 line in recently, but he decided the floor was more interesting than the frags. unfortunately, i don't think he noticed the floor wasn't under water :rolleye1:

yes, the tank is topless.
should i try another wrasse..6 line or something similar and hope for the best, or should i go with something different, and less apt to jumping?

as stated, he'll be the only fish in the tank, and i basically want him to clean up the fleshy foods that the corals don't consume, and possibly eat any bad hitchiking critters.

i'd like to accomplish this and still have a fish that is nice to look at.

thanks

I put a Blue Damsel in mine. Couple reasons. They are hardy and they have some awesome color for a small fish. Plus they are cheap. You also dont have to worry about agression with only one.

Have you considered egg-crating the top of your frag tank? Still allows for easy access, good evaporation and prevents (most) fish from jumping out.

Egg crate is ineffective. Certainly would not keep a six line in the tank. The purpose of the fish is for what?

I am not sure eggcrate would not be effecticve. It may be that you ar are not thinking of the same material as suggested by erikages. He is speaking of plastic light diffuser grid. It has ~3/8" square holes in it. It will keep just about anything in the tank. If that is the material you are speaking about, then I would be eager for you to explain your reasoning :)

There is some arguement about the effect on the overall par that reaches the corals under the grid.

As for the type of fish...

I would select something suited to that size tank. Any fish can jump, but some are much more prone than others. You may want to look at is an opprotunity to keep a non community fish like some of the groupers or triggers, etc.

this is a 30 breeder. a grouper or trigger is out of the question. i would just like something that i like to look at, and would possibly keep the tank clean of tasty pests. wrasse are the kind i am leaning towards.
yes, i don't want to use eggcrate due to the light diffusing issue.
thanks though.

Some of the triggers and groupers don't get very large, very quickly... but yes, they would outgrow the tank! That is a convenient excuse to have to upgrade.

Many of the wrasses get fairly large as well, so if you want to stay within that family, your choices are somewhat narrow. Many wrasses are know as jumpers... so your in the same position that you started in. :)

Have you looked at any of the Pseudochromis or Basslets, many are veyr active and colorful. A few shrimp will take care of what they fish do not eat. The fish poop will help feed the corals.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

hmm a ferocious single pseudo?.........it's a possibility, even though i lost one of those to suicide in out 30 cube.

bean- this is my frag tank. i have a display as well. the only upgrade i'm going to be doing, is when i get a bigger house!

i guess i was hoping someone would have an idea on an interesting fish that perhaps was not reef safe due to it's taste for shrimp, but might do well in a frag/ grow out tank.

maybe i'll just toss a few peppermint shrimp in there and call it a day.......

There are plenty of fish that fit that description...

skunk clowns are kind of cool
some of the hawkfish..
dozens of cool different damslefishes
pruple tilefish are cool so are many goby and dartfish varieties.

Take a look at liveaquaria or another vendors site that has a large selection. You will find something that fits your needs and pleases the eye.

Consider a frog fish perhaps. Some stay small and can be very attractive. They also have that odd ball characteristic to them.

lol..i was never a fan of loins, but even if i was, don't those fu-man-chu's get about 5"?
i think i'm going to try another 6 line.

i was wondering the same thing but my needs would include a ich free/resistant fish. I want to use mine as a coral quarantine and frag tank. but would like the fish poop too. are there any options, my possiblities that i could think of were mollies, some scaleless fish? or seahorse, but i will most likely have too much flow for a seahorse. i may be stuck with peppermints. but they must not allow ich to host if it gets introduced from a coral i put in there.

i don't think ich lives on corals. flatworms, redbugs, nudi's..but not ich.
mine is plumbed into my main system, so the fish poop isn't important. i just wanted to hear people's ideas.
has anyone thought of a valentini puffer? do they eat polyps?

don't seahorses have to be fed live food daily? sounds like alot of trouble.
the mollies sounds like a good choice, but i wish i liked the looks of them.

ick can possibly come in on anything, i want to quarantine all new arrivals for 60 days. if i have a host in the tank then the ick will persist and may enter then main display when the 60 days is up. i need something that will not host ick. are there any options for me?

well mandarins are resistant to it, but they need a good supply if pods. not a good choice imo.

i still don't think ich can come in on corals/inverts. can you back up this statement with a link to some info on that?

My reasoning on eggcrate not keeping fish in is that they go right through it. Not large fish, but fish the size of six lines, flasher wrasses, fairy wrasses, etc.
