wassup everyone - got another clam question, did some background research and couldn't find any other posts regarding the matter so here goes ... i have a nano tank, CSL pc lights (130watt)water checks out fine. ph 8.4 - zero nitrite, nitrate and ammonia , ca about 400 and he's about 20in depth. the question is that at night i observe my squamosa (3in) with his siphon tube fullly extended, almost like he's testing water flow or feeling around the tank. following this he'll clamp shut expelling water and blasting sand all over. i'm thinking he's trying to move or something and he seems healthy. good reaction when my hand/fish buzzez over him so maybe the siphon extention is natural? i dunno, thas why i'm here.. thoughts/opinions pls. thanks -

I have an 8" squamosa that did the same thing! Did you ever hear any reply to your question? I've only had him for a week and was really surprised watching him do it...

Just one possible explanation. Clams accumulate particulate matter around their gills and, from time to time, they need to "clean house." They may do this by sudden contractions as you describe.

This doesn't fully explain all of your observations however. Be nice to hear what others think.

Cheers,
Bob

thanks guys - but most people say that its just normal happy behavior. in water through gills and out water thru siphon so thats why it's "erect" .... haha i sed erect ...
