Six Line Caught in Improved DIY Fish Trap!

YAHOOOOOOOOOO! :bounce1:

Even though I had been warned, I still succumbed to the urge to have a six line wrasse in my 185.....I was careful that he was the LAST wrasse I put in there after many years of stocking the tank with many wrasses and species.

Long story short, he picked on 60% of everybody in there including wrasses, cardinals, firefish, a regal angel (tiny) and anthias. Often forcing them to jump out of the tank. So I tried blocking all of the crevices where he could escape to and hide. The result was a very messy tank and disoriented inhabitants.

I had used a DIY fish trap before but with not much success. You know the type, cutting a plastic soda bottle in two, and inserting the front half in reverse.

This time however I found a makeup compact mirror at the drug store that, after sawing off the the small handle, fit snuggly into the back of the bottle. I threw some mysis in there as an extra incentive.

When the fish saw his reflected image in the bottle he had to investigate. (and start the attack!)

It worked in about ten minutes! Also worked on a cardinal that I wanted to trade in.
Another modification was to poke small holes in front and behind the mirror so that air bubbles would release and the trap would sink.
BTW, I know that some people have had success with non-aggressive six lines. I would NEVER purchase one again.

 Congratulations! I've been trying to catch my lunar wrasse with a barbless hook with no success. It's very fast and very wary. I'm going to give your trap a try.

Give the old fish net a try. It's what I did with a liltle help from lady luck .I put the net in the tank and let it sit ther for a day then next day I fed and cought my nasty damsel!! They are not easy to grab. Bug give it a try .better than buying a 40-50$. trap

Glad to hear about your fishing luck!
I tried the net in the tank but other larger fish (tangs) kept getting snagged.

With this trap you can cut the opening hole to whatever size is appropriate.

congrats on getting it out! I've had similar issues with that fish and don't plan on keeping them anymore.

You know this catching fish has never been a real problem for me. All I do is string some lightweight fishing line through a clear plastic bag and sink it so it lies along the bottom -- ususally with a frag rock or two holding it down and open. I run the line back to my very comfortable viewing chair, throw some mysis or live brine into the bag and go fishing. When the right fish wanders in I simply snap the bag shut and pull it to the top. Even if there's another fish in there, its easy to put back. Aggessive and/or hungry fish go in pretty quick; the smarter ones take longer. But it pretty much always works for me. Longest time was probably a couple of hours.

That is a great method! Wish I had stumbled across it earlier....Although I would have to find a few hours to sit and watch the tank. But it is very similar to real fishing which I love. A nice cold one and a cigar would help pass the time!
