six line or yellow wrasse

Hello all,

In YOUR OPINION, which one is better in controlling pests in a SPS tank ? yellow wrasse ? or six line ? [red bugs, flatworms]

I have had both in the past, but I have learned that six line will pick on yellow one till it kills it [or it jumps out to my other tankl ol]

so want to go with one of the species, which does a better job for you ?

in my last tank, both my six line and yellow one were activly hunting in the SPS colonies for pests. so I dont know which is better lol

I dont like wrases ... so that would be it for wrasse population in my tank.

tank is 150G, how many of them can I fit in ? 3 ?

thanks :)

I think pest control can be hit or miss for either. The six line can be a terror for other tankmates.I have a Melanarus wrasse in my tank-he erradicated all of the zoa-eating nudibranches, fwiw

Neither, there are other ways to control redbugs and flatworms without destroying your biodiversity. Wrasses eat too many of the critters you want.

thanks guys, lets please not make this a discussion over if it works or not ... we all know those do not get anywhere :)

we have to all agree to disagree ... many reefers, think they help keep the numbers in check, if you are not one of those, I can understand your view :)

now for those who share the same view as me, how many would u think can co-exist in a 150 ? and which specie from the ones listed here would u think is more aggressive towards red bugs :)

we stocked my friends 300 with 6 of the six line wrasses ... they are all still there, 2 years after.

Imo I had a yellow corsis wrass and he did a wonderful job.

I will looking into getting another one of them soon, but yes they do eat the other critters you do not want eaten in the system.

you should have added them at the same time ! I tried in my 65G to add the second yellow wrase, ... didnt work.

thanks ...

but not really asking if it would work :)

I'm confused here. Both of the first two posters were trying to help, so what are you saying? They were being constructive and I agree that neither will work. To the post that said Melanarus will work, +1. Why are you set on these two wrasses? They most likely won't eat red bugs and flatworms in all honesty.

yellow coris is great. Mine cleaned out all my flatworms and is great to watch. I use to love my 6 line but it was too aggressive towards other fish.

this could be why he said what he did.... i understand people try to help but when someone wants a certain fish theres probally a reason why he didnt post whats the best wrasse for the job

Very true, and I agree. But he asked will the two species work. IMO opinion, you have to be lucky for them to work as effectively as a Melanarus wrasse, that's all.

And Allmost, I'm not trying to be rude or anything, just wondering. So I hope that no offense is taken...

I have them both. I had the six line first and she ruled the tank. Always picking and looking. Then I got the banana wrasse. She was very small and the six line only chased her occasionally. As the yellow wrasse has turned into an adult she has held her own. I think the chasing back and forth is mostly play time now as they chase each other then give up. On and off. Both of them are active pickers, always looking, that's what they do. If they're finding anything who knows. I've had flatworms and redbugs many eons ago before both fish were introduced. I controlled the pests with chemicals and accepted treatments. Then introduced the wrasses and have never seen any pests since.

As with any fish it's hit or miss. I've seen tanks with several wrasses all living in harmony. So do what you want. It's your tank and wrasses add variety and I think they are cool.

I love my six line
don't care to much for the larger wrasses like the coris

btw f your worried about red bugs pipe fish would be my first
choise over a wrasse no matter how much flow you have the guys
get around a tank I don't have them but a friend has a pair
in a 210 with 3 mp40s

I have a Vrolik's wrasse, which is very similar to a Melanerous wrasse. He constantly is on the hunt, always picking and pulling out stuff from any crack or crevise. I did have a few of the red/brown flatworms here and there, and I don't see them anywhere anymore. He is a very colorful active wrasse, and I would highly recommend him for critter control.

I have had many tanks with both a six line and a yellow coris wrasse together with no problems. If you really don't care for the six line, I would recommend a yellow and a green coris wrasse if you want multiple wrasses. You can have multiple yellows or greens without issues. I've never had issues with them fighting, but it's sometimes difficult to get these wrasses in the lfs (especially ones in good condition since they normally ship from the Philippines). The yellow's and green's get to about the same size (about 2 1/2 inches). Make sure the green is an actual coris wrasse (some lfs's like to switch the green coris with a green bird wrasse).

For controlling pests in your tank , I mean there's always an option right? for me i have pair of dragon pipefish in my 75g reef tank sps & lps mix. although i still have leopard wrasse & sixline wrasse, i don't really pay much attention looking each of my sps colony everyday all i know my corals seems to its all doing okay. your tank is bigger than mine you've got 150g, oh boy if your looking forward to have a sps & lps system you need this fish such as wrasse or dragon pipefish to control your pests you may not see this fish eating all those pests , but im telling you this crew of my fish is the heck of doing great for controlling my pests in my tank.

I find that green coris will eat all your snails once it gets fully adult size this happens to me before or will taste your cleanner shrimp , my yellow coris more likely very peacefull mate in my tank but it didn't last long, jumped out a month ago kinda sad. this yellow coris will ignore all his tank mates as long as its got room to swim around look for pests around your LR's & corals also will protect your clams for pyramid snails any commercial pests in your tank. my yellow coris its about 4" you could see his mask on its face those line very beautiful saddly i'd lost him a month ago =(. Now i ended up with dargon pipefish , leopard wrasse & sixline wrasse.

the yellow carnary wrasse is not a "coris"
Halichoeres chrysus Randall 1981 (1), is a fish of two "good" and one bad common name. It should be called the Golden or Canary Wrasse for its bright bold sun-yellow color, but is most often listed as the Yellow Coris Wrasse (Arggghhh!, it is not a Coris genus member of course). This is an exemplary aquarium species that is suitable for peaceful fish-only and reef systems. To a mere 4 inches or so total length. Aquarium juv. (and adult below) & S. Sulawesi photos.
