Six-line wrasse.

I'm going to pick up a six-line wrasse today if the lfs still has it. Are they jumpers? Any other experiences? Should be fine with hermits and snails, right?

I hear people that have had them say that after a year ot more, they turn mean. i would not get one if you're going to have mandarins -- beside the fact that they'll eat up the pods - they have been known to actively attack mandarins & poke out their eyes

They can jump, I don't have my tank covered but some people have them for a year or two before they jump out.

6lines can be fairly aggressive though, once established, especially in a smaller tank... mine is mean to any new additions (though not as bad as my angel) but he's never killed anyone. Just a bit of warning, because books/websites usually list them as peaceful

I plan for him to have a tank to himself. Although, I think I'm going to try and construct a netting out of pvc piping and fishing line that I saw on another thread that worked to keep fairy wrasses in. Thanks

mine hasn't jumped yet. after about 5mins when i put him in, he started swimming through the rocks. then he came out with an open mouth and something white sticking out of it. at first i was scared. i thought it was an infection. but as i closely observed its mouth, it was just a huge pod!!! the six lines are very voracious pod-eaters, and mine loves anything-including flake food

What do you guys feed your sixlines? I just got one the other day and he's still a bit shy, so I wondered what kinds of specific foods other sixline owners have had much success with, and how do you feed them? Since mine still likes to hide a bit in the rocks, he doesn't pick up much food from the water column, so I tried putting some mysis in a turkey baster to squirt it close to his fav rock, but the turkey baster is big and is scares him. Any suggestions?

ewaldm: mine seems to have made friends w/ my pair of clowns already. when he's not hiding or searching for pods, he swims around a bit right w/ the clowns. no aggression yet...

My 6-line used to eat only mysis when he was still new. He'd capture the pieces and whack them against the rocks before eating.
He also used to eat snails, anytime they'd go on the glass or come out of the sand. Now he eats almost anything I put in the tank, even flakes and pellets.
Mine has also turned pretty mean and has tried to kill other fish, mostly fish with similar looks, other wrasses etc.
You can also use eggcrate to cover your tank, thats what I use. It seems to work well.

i got one about 2 weeks ago... he refused flake (formula 2) for about a week... but has gotten fatter ever since being introduced into my tank now he readily eats anything i put in there as long as my tangs dont eat it first.

hes still relatively small and none of the big fish seem to care about his existance... but my 4 blue green chromis dont seem to like him very much... he does seem to stand his ground now as opposed to a week ago when he would swim off.

I'm thinking of adding one to my smaller reef tank (30 gal, 36" long). The tank has been set up for 20 months and currently holds a perc pair, pink-spotted goby, and a pygmy angel. The tank is CRAWLING with pods, swarms of them! Will they also take prepared foods or are they totally dependent on the pods?

like tryffin, mine eats anything. he also shows no aggresion towards any new/old additions

Mine was very well behaved for the first 6mo. As he got got bigger and more comfortable he got more aggresive. Anything I put in after him got a good chase and a nip. One time I put 3 peppermint shrimp in and he went after them. I actually watched him pick them apart. I had a cleaner shrimp in my tank for a year before I put him in there and he never bothered him. Then I went on vacation and came back and no sign of him. I will never know for sure, but I think he got him. I really liked him don't get me wrong he had alot of personality and was fun to watch. Sadly I lost him in a rockslide.

Do any of you find that your 6 line is aggressive in a larger tank.
I am building a new 280 gal and am undecided about moving him into the new set up or back to the store.
Thoughts?

Mine isn't as bad in my 108 as when I had him in my 38 ... but he does pick on new fish that are added, especially if they go near the area where he sleeps. I think if I ever tried to add any sort of fairy/flasher wrasse he'd kill it in short order Mine is about 9 months "old"... so I may run into problems yet, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, it's his home too after all and I do like him
