sk8ergolie31's 30L build thread!

hey i just got a 30L today from a friend and was wondering what type of lights and skimmer i should get for it..

i was thinking about putting the refugium inside the tank bout 10g worth, but blocking it off with a baffle and having some teeth at the top so some flow can get in there due to the tank not being drillable..

i do have an overflow box but using it would take up about the same amount of room as making a third of the tank a fuge.

some input or suggestions would be swell!

Why is the tank not drillable, tempered? A HOB refugium could work just as good and wouldnt take up the space.

yea its tempered.
haa i never thought of that.. i have an AC 50 mod on my 10g for the fuge part.. i could just put sumthing like an AC 70 or 110 as a HOB fuge for the 30L!

Does the tank have a stand? If so, why not put the fuge down there. What kinda stuff do you want to keep? Is it gunna be a reef or a fish tank? This makes a big difference in the amount of light you need.

its sitting on a dresser right now, and i cant put the fuge down below because the glass is tempered and i cant drill, so i cant do any plumbing like all the big boys. id like to keep softies only and some fish/inverts. im going to build a canopy soon but no need for the stand. its a 36x12x17.

As for lighting, What do you plan to keep?
Pics?

no camera ATM i will try to get some pics soon!

he also plans on keeping an anemone. he does have an overflow box but it will take up space inside the tank. if that is the suggested route we want to know

I'm currently using a 30G cube with a siphon overflow box (Didn't want to drill the tank) and if I did this again I would do it the same. The benefit of adding a refugium to my system seemed to dramatically decrease the nuisance algae in my display.

yea i understand where your coming from :)..
im probably just gonna get a aquaclear 70 or 110, hang it on the back of the tank and mod it up to be a refugium so there can be more space for the livestock to grow. rather then having a box taking up a bunch of space on the inside.

how about lighting? anyone have a clue.. i was thinking along the lines of a 150w MH or is that to much or to little for softies, some fish and inverts..

do you think a 175w MH would be perfect? i heard a 150w MH could be to little..i dont wanna mess things up with the lighting situation thats y so many questions, sorry. id through in some t5 actinics too.. well not literally but u get what i mean:lol:

for softies 150w is fine if you plan to keep LPS/SPS down the road then a 200w may be better.

would t5s be the best bet for actinics or has there been other ones(cheaper) that people like better?

i like the blueish look to my tank!

You could go with 1x150w halide and 2x24w Actinics.

 alright thanks, ill look into it

I agree with the MH and actinics just in case you want to get something in the future that needs more light. where in FL are you?
