Skimmer for 10 gallon sump

I know it's a small sump. But it fits my stand and it's better than no sump. I need a skimmer to run in/on it. I currently have a CPR Bakpak 2 running off a maxi jet 1200. It's been pulling a full cup of pretty nasty stuff every 3 days, so it's working pretty well. When I set up the sump I was planning on moving it down below and out of the way (finally), and placing if off the end of the sump, with the pump in the chamber accepting the overflow (highest water volume). I've heard mixed reviews on this, so I'd like to hear from anyone (Jonny C!) who has tried it with regards to what level the pump would have to be at.

I'd also like to hear what people may have in 10 galon sumps as far as in-skimmer models. I was thinking of the tunze 9002, but don't know if the water level in the sump will be high enough.

I have a 9005, an aquaclear 110 and a fuge in my 10g:

I have a couple of the in tank CPR's that are like the backpack. I used to run one in a 15, should work great in a 10 gal too. PM me if interested.

When I used a Remora by hanging it on the sump, the MJ1200 was hanging underwater about 3''. It didn't work very well but then again the skimmer was a piece of junk so it's hard to say. Any possible way that you can fit an Octopus NW-110 in there? It would out-skim all of the above mentioned IMO. If not, I'd go with a Tunze/Octo HOB (or just keep the BakPak). :)

i have an old excalibur skimmer i used for my frag set up you are welcome to come check it out if you want..

I don't know why you can't use your cpr?? Maybe the mixed reviews were because people had fluctuating water levels? It seems you have thought that out, and are planning to put the skimmer in "the chamber with the overflow." If bubbles from the drain are seen as a problem, maybe a small sock could help with them.

This would be a bit too large as far as the footprint goes I'm afraid. I actually have enough room with the height inside the stand, because I'm taking the shelf out, but a 10'' footprint will be alot of space in a 10'' wide tank!

Part of the problem that I read about was with fluctuating water levels, and another part was with the pump for the HOB either not being submerged enough, or too much when compared to just hanging off the back of the tank. I do think for starters I am just going to stick with the bakpak for now. It currently does a pretty good job as long as I clean it out every month or so. If it is skimming any less in it's new role, I can always explore other options. The first glass baffle creating the overflow chamber of the sump is going to be at least 8'' high, so if I had to go with something else right away, the Tunze 9002 would be an easy plug-in from what I've read. Thanks for the input everybody ;-)

Look at my picture; the 11" water level never changes in the first chamber; all evaporation shows up in the pump side chamber. I've never seen any need for a baffle system. The two mj1200's are my return pumps each feeding there own phosban Rx (Carbon & GAC) hanging on the back of the mt. With the pumps on the far side and chaeto in between I don't get any bubbles from the sump. I saved on the divider by laminating two pieces of window glass together with silicon, I think it cost about $5.

I have a similar setup that works really well for me. Use the baffle to set the water height in the skimmer section. It will stay constant and the water level in the return section will fluctuate with evaporation.

I'm running an SWC 120 cone skimmer (recommended 5-8" of water). IIRC, foot print is 6" x 7"

On a side note, ATO systems can be pretty cheap and easy to setup, and will help with fluctuating water levels. Since the CPR is working well for you, this might be something to look in to if you are concerned about changing water levels. Would certainly be a cheaper option than a new skimmer, and would add a bit of stability to your water as well.

in a standard 10 gallon you can fit an octopus nw-110. I have one in mine. great bang for the buck. the 10" wide is bascally the side the has the pump feeding the skimmer. otherwise it fits nicely.
