Skimmer for a 75G SPS tank

Hello all!

I have a 75G tank with a 29G sump, I have a 12x12 skimmer compartment that is about 11 inches deep in my sump.

Currently I have a bubble magnus Curve 5. It's been working great, but I'm starting to have some nutrient buildup in my tank that is fueling bubble algae and I'm thinking about upgrading.

I'd like something I can put a cleaning head on for more consistent performance. I'm thinking about the bubble magnus curve 7.

What do you think? Is this a good choice? Would you choose something else?

I really like my reef octopus with DC pump. Phenomenal skimmer with excellent build quality.

That one is double the price and a little outside my range at $600 however there is this Reef Octopus one that advertizes double the airflow:

The classic 202

Does that equate to double the performance? It's about the same price as the Curve 7.

Does my signature show up? It's listed there but I'm using tap a talk. I think I have the 150SS or. Something like that.

I'm in the process of gathering all the equipment for 90g shallow sps upgrade and I'm leaning towards the Nyos Quantum 120 myself. I really like the build quality on this skimmer.
Just my two pennies.

You will get the skimmer thing figured out. However, there is always enough nutrient in the water to have nuisance algae, diatoms or cyano. You will need to get something to consume the bubble algae. If you starve the algae of all nutrient, you will starve the diatoms in the coral.

Skimmer doesn't do much for nutrients:) I'd look to your feeding/stocking plan.

What's your maintenance routine? Cuc? Elevated nutrients could be from lack of water changes, over feeding, tds in top off and a number of other things? I agree, a new skimmer won't necessarily solve your nutrient problem, but finding the cause will help you find a solution. Give us some more details about your set up and we can help you better.

What do you mean that a skimmer doesn't do much for nutrients?

I'd love to understand this statement because I rely on my skimmer for this :)

My tank uses only the skimmer and a Fuge run reverse daylight with cheato for nutrient control.

I do a 15G water change every 2-3 weeks. (That's about 20%)

Fish Load:
1 Yellow Tang
1 Chalk Bass
2 False Perc Clowns
1 Purple Firefish
1 Sand sifting Golby.
- Various shrimp/hermets/snails

I feed 1 cube of frozen food every day. I rotate between Krill, Mysys, Gut Loaded Brine, and a couple others I forget now.

I clean my glass about every 2 days because it gets hazy.

I also have a Koralin CA reactor and APEX etc. The coral are doing really well, growing quickly with great color.

KH ~8
CA ~420
MAG ~1300
NO3/P04 not tested.

What would you do? Would you upgrade the Skimmer first? Or try something like GFO?

Thank you,
Whiskey

That is nice! Did you upgrade from another one? If so which one? And did you notice a large difference in performance and tank cleanlyness?

Sort of... I broke down a red sea 60 gallon and jumped up to a red sea 110 gallon.

So basically all new equipment except for the apex, doser, and the top off.

I have had many skimmers over the years and this thing is a beast. It was on for about 20 mins, right out of the box, and it started pulling skimmate.

Pricey, but the quality and performance are fantastic.

Aaah. Gotcha. It's a much better skimmer than the Curve 7 - that's for sure.

BUT! Because of the replys above I'm not too sure that a skimmer would help my problem. I'm curious to see what people say.

I just ordered an Ultra Low range Hanna P04 checker. I'm curious to see what the numbers are.

I am also building a new system and bought the nyos 120. I am 90% sure I will be selling it before it ever sees water. I should have bought the 160 or better yet I should have bought the Bubble King Double cone 150. To me its a decent small foot print design but I see several things that could potentially go wrong with it. Just off the top of my head the rubber seal and the acyrlic rod it sits on looks like it could break off pretty easy and the collection cup is really small. I am guessing it only holds about a cup of skim.

That pegleg is a really interesting skimmer. I love that adjustment, and it seems to pull a ton of air. Plus it's cheap! And I like the idea of building it myself.

How loud is it? Does anyone have any experience with them?

Most importantly, do you think a better skimmer would help me? Or would you add something like GFO instead?

Thank you,
Whiskey

I have the Pegleg 180i and I built it myself. Quality could be better, but it works. Never dealt with gluing acrylic before so take that into account.

Setting the water height is very easy and it pulls more dark skimmate than my Skimz skimmer.

How quiet is it? Sound is a big deal for my wife.

I got my ultra low range p04 test kit today.

I got 68 ppb, which is 0.21 ppm. I don't remember if this is supposed to be .1 or 0.01. Do you remember?

Thank you!
