Skimmer for JBJ 28g cube

So I know there's a few threads with skimmers mentioned for the JBJ 28g cube and some are pretty old by now. I personally want a skimmer under $100. It gets tricky because of the limited space in the back of the tank. I'm open to HOBs that fit or in the JBJ back sump.

Under $60 is the Odyssea PS75 Skimmer. Does it work well? I saw a youtube video of it working on someones JBJ. Looked good.
Under $80 is the Coralife Super Skimmer 65g. I know the brand well but hows the skimmer? Does it fit?
Just over $100 is the Tunze 9001. Looks like a nicely built product. I kind of like these compact all in one skimmer units. On my bigger tank I had a AquaC Remora and it worked great.

I have a few other things I need to get, pumps, filter media, CF bulb replacement, maybe an ATO, etc. So I was really trying to keep it under $100 on the skimmer. Any recommendations on the ones mentioned or any others in this price range?

Much appreciated and thank you!

See if the AquaticLife 115 fits. Then that would be my recommendation. 2/3 you mentioned I wouldn't put in a tank, the third on that list, I've tried and used, and it works, but not very well.

Thanks. It looks like it fits the Bio Cube 29g but not sure if it fits the JBJ Nano 28g. I'm willing to mod or cut things up if it means a good skimmer will fit but would like some assurance that someone's gotten it to fit before spending the money.

Sorry, looks like it doesn't fit. I would go check out marine Depot website and they have a nice video showing which fit on which nano tank

I appreciate the research. I saw that video. The nicer two are expensive and the lower priced one doesn't look that great. I only bought the whole tank/stand/etc for $150 so I didn't want to spend too much on just a skimmer.

Does anyone have experience with the Eshopps Nano Protein Skimmer since that one is only a few bucks more then $100?

Keep an eye out in the classifieds. Over the last several months there have been a couple of Aquamaxx HOB-1s that sold for around $100 - $125. Performance wise, that's probably the best skimmer that you'll find for the NC28.

AquaticLife 115. It was recommended here and it's perfect

Does it fit the JBJ 28g Nano Cube though? I can only find a couple reports of it not fitting and nothing about anyone using it in the JBJ.
It does fir the Biocube 29g but I don't have that.

Also I'm now interested in if anyone has a Reef Octopus Classic HOB 100 (or BH100) working on the JBJ 28g? It looks like they can be had for under $100 used and a lot of great reviews for it. It's a HOB with an intake pipe and out pipe that go over the back so I believe I can just stick the pipes in the middle compartments and make it work fine.

Are you going to run the skimmer in the middle section, or still use that for a media basket?

A few items fit in the middle, but if you are going to use one of the side compartments, it's a very very slim selection. I'm personally using the actual JBJ skimmer, with some very rare luck so far. Although I would like to move away to something that is not wood airstone driven sooner rather than later.

I used a Buocube skimmer with an air stone years ago on my 12g cube and it was a nightmare. It worked a little bit but was never consistent. I eventually upgraded to a 70g with a sump and a AquaC Remora in sump skimmer with an actual pump type instead of the stupid air stone and I loved it. So overall just not a fan of the cheap stone/wood block skimmers.

I don't mind what chamber I use the skimmer in. I'm thinking of picking up a HOB media reactor instead of the media basket. I know there's some that fit in the middle chamber, but I'm leaning towards a HOB style skimmer which I might be able to fit in one of the other chambers. I like the HOB ones because they rely less on consistent water level and will allow me a little more time to add some water or eventually get an ATO if needed.

Yea there aren't many nano skimmers that are needle style that fit inside these things. Airstones are definitely not the most reliable or consistent though, so I'd like to dump mine soon. One I thought of trying was the euro nano skimmer II, but it has a lot of mixed reviews.

Seems everyone loves the aquamaxx HOB1, I am looking into the remora by aquac, can't find much anywhere with it in this tank.

I wouldn't do the remora. I had one on my 24g cube. It was loud and I don't trust the mechanism. I would rather have the pinwheel based skimmers like the aquamaxx. They also run more efficiently and quieter than any of the forced-air skimmers.

For whatever reason I cannot see classifieds yet.... :(
And that thread is the one I have previously read for reference, thanks for it though I didn't have it saved.

Not so sure why all the negativity of the Tunze 9001. It's plug and play and from day one had zero micro bubbles. It take a week or so to tune it just right. Mine actually worked well with the screw almost all the way in. After it seasons for a few more weeks I'll dial it up a bit and see what happens. Early on if you open the screw too much it fills the cup quickly with almost zero gunk extraction. Keep I screwed in almost fully to start. Mine works great and has a small footprint. I put it on my back wall of my biocube . Have an ATO so would not know much about that.

I don't want to put a skimmer on the inside of the tank. And the BioCube has slightly different dimensions of the sump chambers then the JBJ NanoCube so not sure how the fit is for the 9001 in the JBJ. Also the large center chamber where the 9001 would fit in the NC28 is where the water intake is for the champers. So I'm not sure if that would block it and impede the flow into the chambers.

For me I think I'm going to go with either a Aquamaxx HOB-1 or a Reef Octopus Classic HOB from the classifieds when I'm ready. I also like the fact that I can retain most of the chambers including a media basket with these HOBs. I had $100 to spend on Amazon so I was originally wonder if anything on there would be good enough but I don't want to waste $60 on a skimmer that's not going to work. Instead I got other needed supplies on Amazon and will pick up one of the ones I just mentioned later.

Also has anyone had any experience with the "Blue Ocean PP75 Protein Skimmer"? It looks like a knock off of the Reef Octopus Classic HOB but for a third of the price. It's on Amazon for $65. I just can't find any reviews or user info out there. Not sure if it's brand new or just complete junk that no one's ever bought one.
