Skimmer for nanotank

Well i am now shopping for a skimmer for a 10gal reef tank. Firstly, is it necessary and secondly if it is recommended, im curiuos what make and model to go with.

i also read that sponges may control excess waste enough to rule out the need for a skimmer.

With a 10 gallon, I'd argue that regular weekly water changes of 5 - 10 %, perhaps more, would be your best bet- and sponges, other life forms aren't going to be enough. Good luck-

Try this link. They claim its the smallest skimmer in the world. 6.5" x 2". No idea if it works, but for $29.95 its worth a shot.

Fission Nano-Protein Skimmer has been brought up before in the nano forum and from what people over there said, they do work fairly good for a smaller tank.

I just ordered a Fisson Protein Skimmer from NanoTuners.com along with a nanoskim. I haven't recieved it yet so not sure how well it will work.

just do weekly water changes and u'll be fine. i do about a 30% water change on my nano

yeah id like to use as little equipment as possible (small tank) yet for 30 bucks it may be worth it for peice of mind that waste is being removed.

but if its unneccesary then ill scrap the idea.

I am also looking at a skimmer for my 10 gallon nano. Will a protein skimmer like the Fission also keep that icky surface film from forming on the top of the water?

In order to keep the nasty film off the top of your water, you must feed the skimmer the layer from the top of the tank. Try reading here:

Read the third post down by Anthony Calfo. Great reading in that thread about understanding what a protein skimmer does. It helped me a TON.

dont buy the fission, its the worst skimmer ever, it makes the seaclown look like a deltec, the nano remora should be coming out this month or next just wait for that

Wow, that's a great article about skimming, Reeses. It totally convinced me to save my money, and stick with my converted Aquaclear fuge with "surface skimmer" attachment, and not get a protein skimmer at all for the 10 gal nano. Sounds like it's way too much effort/money/time for minimal payoff.

The Fission skimmer is a pain. I haven't run mine since it flooded my office a couple of weeks ago. It creates tons of micro-bubbles as well. Here's a pic.
