Skimmer Help!!!

Hey guys, I am trying to build a new tank setup and this time I am planning to do it the right way. I've been doing tons of research about skimmer but there is so many options out there and so many good/bad reviews on every single skimmer. I cant decide on which one to buy. I am interested on the BK or Vertex alpha. I am not sure about vertex since they do not use the red dragon pump anymore. My system is going to be around 120g heavily stocked. I was opting for alpha 170 or bk 150. According to BK, the 150 is only rated at 92g but Jeremy from premium aquatics has recommended for tanks up to 150g. The next option would be the bk 180. What do you guys think?

Never a bad choice to double up on the skimmer. BK and Vertex are both well known brands and if you did not look into Reef Octopus I would suggest you look at them also !

Welcome to RC and happy reefing !

The Alpha's are extremely underrated and tend to starve for dissolved organics on displays at or below their ratings. The issue is their neck diameter in my opinion. I say this after having owned an Alpha 300 on a heavily stocked 480g display and ran it for several years. I've also helped many Alpha users here over the years too. That said, I think they are being or have been discontinued. I do know that RE is no longer building them for Vertex but last I head they were being discontued. I could be wrong about that though.

As far as any skimmer goes, it would be great to know your display volume and stock load. Also if you have questions on the Bubble Kings, I would suggest posting in this thread where I would have a bit more lattitude to discuss those skimmers.

I was in the same about couple of months ago. I did a lot of research, and I settled on Reef Octopus SRO series. It has been around for a while and has proven track record. It is built well, almost silent, and I didn't pay for bells and whistles that I don't need.
