i just got my new amiracle mini quad skimmer, and the rio 800 is making this humming noise( not really loud, i dont even think loud enough to keep me at wake at night) any ideas how to stop it??
It depends on what's causing the humming. In all likelyhood the motor or skimmer body is hitting the side of your tank.
I would try twisting the pump away from the wall of the tank and tightening the connection to the skimmer. Tightening the skimmer to the tank should help as well.
I would consider replacing that rio with a different powerhead. Rios are known to cause lots of problems mellting down leaking oil and or electricity into the tank.
humming gone, i just put the rio behind a piece of LR floating in the middle of the water, what would you suggest as another powerhead for it? (i have 2 power sweeps i could use, i also have another brand of PH that does 200 GPH
I think RIO's are better made than they used to be. They're still not great, but they're better than their rep (oil free now too). If you get the pump closer to the surface, it might suck in more air.
A 'mod' you might be able to do is to add an airstone and pump for more bubbles in the skimmer.
I think that's the same skimmer Stefanie just got up and running. I think she used a MJ 1200 with air being sucked in the inlet instead of the venturi.
Skimmers can take a few days to a few weeks to get working in some instances, leftover residue from construction impairs foam production. I recently purchased a used skimmer and had to wait 4 days before I had any foam production.
