I am thinking of creating my own skimmer. I have some basic designs in mind but I was wandering if anyone has built there own before? If any of you have any feedback it would be great. I am probably going to build the main case from PVC.

DIY skimmers are very popular. You have several different technologies to choose from. Counter Current, Needle Wheel, Berlin, Beckett, Downdraft... etc.

What size of tank and what kind of bioload do you have. What kind of money are you willing to spend? What are your noise and size limitiations?

Counter Current is fairly easy. The drawback is the airstones. You will also need to get a pretty hefty air pump.

I am in the process of making a 6" diamter 5' Tall CC skimmer. I will have $300-$500 in it when all is said and done.

$100 for the pipe
$200 for the air pump
$075 for the stones
$100 or so for the extras...

I could have purchased an ASM G3 for about $250 and saved myself the trouble. In this case I think my CC skimmer will do as well and use less electricity (gravity fed). I don't think I will save enugh electricity to matter....but It is a project I will enjoy.

The ASM can not be run out of the sump without a lof to modification, so that was another reason I decided to DIY.

Look for a thread by a guy named TINYGIANTS. His documented the contruction of a CC skimmer fairly well.

Lots of people have made DIY CC pvc skimmers I currently have 2 in operation. The taller you make them the better they work, but the more expensive of an airpump you will need. Mine are only 3 feet tall 4 inch diameter with 2 luft pumps running airstones in each skimmer. Work great.

my cc skimmer is about 5ft tall and i have 2 luft air pumps on it as well 1 just wasnt enough but the thing works wonderfully and i have mine gravity fed out of my tank and then i have 2 drains into the refugium.
