Skimmer Overflowing

I have the RS-180. Has a GenX-4100 (new pump model)

Gate Valve Mod

It calls to sit in 6-8 inches of water. It's at 6.5" ( I had it higher and the guy from ER said to lower the amount of water)

It is overflowing.

The output on the gate valve is not under water
The gate valve is all the way open.
I have no more room to raise the skimmer
The water that is overflowing is CLEAR

When I turn it off, the water drains and basically begins to float. Should this happen?

There's only so many things going on so it's driving me nuts not being able to figure this out

Anyone?

Skimmers will many times overflow when there is no air being injected to them. No air= more water. Is that what you mean by clear water?? I am not familiar with that skimmer but you may have restricted the output with the gate valve mod?? Try it with out the valve in its orig. config. and see what happens. Might just be to much pump for that skimmer as well, if that the case a ball valve on the pump output should solve the problem.
Good luck,
Kevin

Push the outlet pipe all the way down until the skimmer gets a bit more broken in. Once it calms down, slowly raise the pipe to skim wetter as you like. The cup is going to fill faster the higher you have the outlet pipe. After I moved my tank and stirred up the sand I had to lower the pipe on my CS-80 in order to keep the cup from overflowing. Once is settled down, I raised it back up.
